squid as bait

what do ye think about squid as bait i have used it a couple of times as a last resort and have blanked every time maybe it is because i get it from fish mongers i could really do with some tips and advice about squid

I buy frozen squid from a chinese super market, find it great in a cocktail with Sandeel or Mack, Caught lots of dogfish on it( I know you can catch them on anything)and some codling and had some dabs when using rag tipped with Squid!

I would normally have some squid with me most of the year but especially from October to April. Great for wraps to help keep the crabs at bay ( I hate the doctor). Strips are good for tipping and will catch almost anything. You can buy it in packs of three or by the box at most tackle shops.

I've had coalies and pout on plain small squid baits, whole squid can be used for large bass and cod plus ray and conger aswell I think. A search here will throw up some good answers, this Q has been asked a few times b4.

Wouldn't advise buying it from tackle shops, 3 frozen squid cost me 5euro in Wicklow! :? can be gotten much cheaper elsewhere.

I've been trying those small "party squid" recently. They're only a couple of inches long and seem to have much more juice than the bigger variety. Didn't catch anything, but other baits weren't working either.

I use squid for Cod in the winter along the north coast, seems to work quiet well. I normally buy the small calamari squid in a 2lb box, good size for putting on whole or stuffing with other baits.

and small strips fished with a float seems to keep the young nephew happy with coalies :lol:

mini-squid are great! whole they'll take dogs codling and i'm sure bass but as a cocktail they are even better. if you remove head and legs you can stuff other baits into them. strips/ tipping will catch smaller species. good tough bait for codling and rays. just be sure the squid cannot slip over the barb of the hook or you will miss a lot of bites!

use with crab for smoothound.

baby squid are excellent on the boats for tipping baits for a variety of species, really only had codling and dogs on the shore with them

by baby squid do ya mean dat are about 4 inches long or is there a smaller one availabe.ive used the very big english squid available in supermarkets for huss and ray.cut into strips abfound out 5x2 inches and fished with a small mackeral fillet we found them quite effective for ray.also the head of these larger squid worked quite well for huss when fished on their own.

only really ever used squid for tipping baits or in a cocktail but i have heard that if you pack a full squid with mussel or lug pierce it a few times and wrap it to a pennel rig it good for big cod havent tried it yet but will be when i go fishing for cod in waterford.

I seen those baby squid recently in a local tackle shop and would definately fancy giving them a go someday.

those packs of baby squid are top notch. use in a cocktail with lug and ya cant go wrong. a wide variety of fish love it!!
