It is a question to you all.
Has rag stopped working and has lug become the new King.
I find in the last month that rag are the worst bait to have with you.
Reply please

most of the places we fish down round this area rag is stone useless bar for small pollock or wrasse, find that lug and esp black lug outfishes it

Similar to Lumpy, I find rag only ever much use for tipping baits off with. Rubbish on its own apart from wrasse bashing.

at this time of year all i would use is lug and mac and only use rag for a mark where rag rules over lug ie portstewart or benone

rag will still fish well but now is the time to have lug with you when you go out. bring lug everywhere until late spring! cocktailed together they can make a good bait.

Hey Mark do you buy or collect your own lug this time of year?
Find it harder to source in shops but i find it easier to dig than rag :? Well where i dig anyways?

I've always found rag a top bait for Bass on the east coast. It also has the advantage of keeping longer than lug, so it's easy to have a box on standby in the fridge.

At this time of year i would have to say that lug is the best bait on its own or with crab or mussel there is no way a fish would turn its nostrals up to it and go for a rag. even if i was going for flats id stil raher use freshly dug lug.
on a lot of the wexford beaches this year a lot of the bass were geting caught ob just lug aswell.
and i know a load of you are not going to beleive this but one of my mates caught a small tope around 10-12 lb on lug this year on tinnaberna no messing.
lug is the queen of baits but crab is the king.

I wouldnt know were to start when it comes to digging my own lug and may not have the time due to hours i work.
So were would you buy it and roughly how much it cost.
But just incase i were to try and dig are there any spots close to belfast and what would i need to do it.

Lug for me, carries a far better scent and scent is the key when groundfishing especially at night.

Would only ever use rag, but then again its easy to be turned off a bait when your not catching.
There was a bit of a push the year before last on rag conservation. Few Dublin shops would stop supplies. Havent come across it since.

rag best in daylight and lug best in darkness thats the rule i always use as i always take both every time i go fishing

is the rag ban stil in effect? I know it used to be. Our club dont use rag from October to March, i think the rag are breeding at this time of year.
The rag at this time of year, well some of them are full of green "stuff" i think these are the ones that are breeding.
These are not so good for bait.
