Huss versus Dogs - identification

Tue Nov 07, 2006 2:41 pm

Hi Croppy

Huss have odd nasal passages, under the tip of their nose. Dogs don't. I fdind that colour is not at all useful as it can very dramatically depending on the location. I've nad near bladck dogs and very light coloured huss...

There is a species guide available from http://www.cfb.ie by download I think?

Check this link out:

http://www.cfb.ie/fishing_in_ireland/fish_id.htm

The key identifier is a doggy has one nostril flap and huss has 2. I'd spot huss without this as even the small ones are stockier and they usualy have big spots in their colouration. Dogs and huss can be light or dark depending on the type of ground their caught.

Another point being the record LSD stands at 4lb 4oz so catching 2 record busting fish in a session would be somewhat fortuitous.

i was going to say two 5lbs dogfish   .. definately huss

as everyone has mentioned their nose, there is also the shape of their head.., there is also the distance between the dorsal and anal fin..

huss usually have spotts on its belly as well .. while doggies are failry clean..

and there is no such thing as a 10lbs doggie..

when you catch larger huss, just look at it.. especially if your after catching a smaller doggie.. you will see thedifferences straight away.. and from then on you will be a learned man :D :D :D
