I recently purchased a "new" Abu Sportsmag on Ebay which arrived a few days ago. Nice "new" box, nice clean shiny "new" reel. Lovely I thought and promptly loaded it with line. Gave the spool a good crank and hit the spool release button and watched in awe as it seemed to turn forever. Lovely, I thought once again. Thinking that it was possibly just a little on the lively side I opened it up to oil the bearings. My "new" reel had a nice layer of powdered Mono on the spool from where the previous owner had contrived to get his line trapped around between the spool and the frame.
There were no brake blocks. An easy enough problem to rectify and I duly slipped a pair in. Worse however was to come, I opened up the other side of the reel and discovered the whole bloody magnet set up was missing from inside!!!!
Does anyone have a defunct Sportsmag I could obtain this part from or failing that is there somewhere I can send it to have it fixed? I have tried to no avail to contact the seller in relation to this

Contact ABU/Pure Fishing, they can arrange to have the reel repaired and serviced for you, i think Peter Coogan is the repair and service agent for them, he is in the UK, somewhere.
Either way, start with ABU, tell them whats wrong, then either buy the parts or send to Peter Coogan to repair & service.
Alternatively,I have used "The Reel Doctor". He is based in England, very quick and very reasonable.
Send a mail describing the problems, and sendteh reel to him, he'll email you back with the cost and he accepts paymenty by paypal.
He has a website, its
http://www.thereeldoctor.co.uk. I couldnt recommend him highly enough.
Hope this helps?!

That's not on Pete, you should name and shame the offending ebay seller so people know to avoid him in the future.
I have used Nigel Frith, aka the Reel Doctor as well in the past and he is highly recommended. You will find his details on his site.

Hope you get it sorted.

It was a private seller not an online tackle shop type seller. I will however post the name up if no response in next couple of days. I cant understand why you would remove this mechanism from the reel though??? Daft stuff to be honest. Brake blocks I can understand, the mags...no! Fecking thing is vicious fast to the point of being uncastable without some serious thumb control.

Andys looking after me John, thanks though. Incidentally, what line did you have loaded on that Mag Elite? Its lovely stuff altogether, very fine, what BS is it? Used reel for first time last night chucking a 3oz flat lead with the Triplex and it went off like a rocket.

Christened it last night with a 5lb bass and 2 doggies, used it for the first time after I hit a snag and lost 100 yards of line off one of my 525s.... :D Its a flier alright. That line is incredibly fine for 15lb line, I must get my hands on some. Cheers.

Stick in 1 brakeblock and forget about the mags. Got a sports mag, the first thing I done was to rip out the mags. Use your thumb for the shorter cast and let it rip for distance. The thumb was invented long before mags.
