sand spike as a tripod

I spent 1 mnth this year fishing both beach and on the Ebro in Spain why there i used a lot of there kit.

We all know about the pro and cons of long rods.

But they use sand spikes as tripods in wind or rain. Just wonder anyone use them for beach and shingle beaches.

I like the idea and have ordered one online to see. Small 4ft and easy to carry as i fish with one rod most trips should suit. and it keeps rod high from wave and sea weed.

Any thoughts on these.

the old grinder i have as burnt out but have a new one in the post i will do a full right up when i have finished it

if it helps why not use spike you have and just put a cup newr bottom and a plastic rod holder at top. as that same as one i ordered and i bet half the price.

Ian Golds still makes mono-pods (sand spike) they do have their uses, but!! your on about long rods, be prepared for a stiff neck if your looking at your rod tip 4m or 5m high, either that or you have to be a good distance away to see the tip with ease.

The east-coast American anglers use them quite a bit, big heavy ones, the secret is to have a foot rest at right angles to the bottom of the spike, as you need to dig it into the sand or shingle quite deep, otherwise it will topple over.

They are a bit like reinventing the wheel though :lol: but like I said, they can have their uses.

I have a sand spike its aluminium so as light as a feather cost me something like 7 or 8 euro and works really well in sand. I sometimes have a problem if there are rocks in the sand but it is so light it comes with me everywhere (when I'm fishing anyway :) ) handy piece of kit and cheap too. like rockhopper said sit well back also make sure you have your headlamp when night fishing.
