Bite styles and striking times

Hi people,
Just said I'd put it out there! I understand different species of fish have different styles of bite, and different striking strengths, and timing. Does anyone have any information regarding these questions, from experience,etc?

Is there any species in particular you are targeting..?

None in particular, but I suppose the commone species, dogfish, pollock, bass, wrasse. Any information would be appreciated.

As im in work im a bit limited for time but I will drop you a detailed PM later on. The best info I can pass on in a short time is to always hold the rod, dont use tripods if it can be helped as you can miss bites with them. If you hold the rod you usually wont miss any bites.

Bear in mind that if you're using grips leads especially when targetting smaller species like whiting etc. although the same can be said for dogfish/bass and lot of other species the grip lead acts pretty much as a self hooking trap. The fish hook themselves against the resistance of the lead which they can't break out. This is ONLY a very general rule ot thumb mind you - that's how its supposed to work - in theory

A lot of times you see anglers striking into these fish and in effect what they're doing is simply breaking out the grip lead and little or none of that energy is gone into striking/setting the hooks. Just a point to bear in mind...

True, true, saw you had some nice fish down my way Eoghan, looked like a cracking couple of days. Been lots of bass around in the 4lbish bracket, has been really good down here this summer :-)

ok here goes

from my experience feel free to find fault

flatties: 1 definite nod of the rod if you miss it he will swallow the hook
action: wait a while strike and reel in hes going nowhere

bass: unsecured rods head towards water rods on sand spikes more slanted than you remember, rod shaking
Action:Grab rod strike and reel like crazy

dogfish: rod moves somewhere between a little and alot, not very energetic more of a lazy pull if you miss the first strike leave it there they sometimes they come back if they haven't finished it.

pollock: can be a good take good shake on the rod tip. I wait for a pull and then strike as pollock will come back to a bait

conger: a bit different can be very tentative if it is in open water had one once that i thought was a crab until someone next to me shouted at me to strike. usually quiet strong though has to be taken quickly before it gets back to its hidey hole

for most fish I strike when there is a pull on the line in the hope that the hook is in its mouth and it catches.

the only exception is bass which i strike immediately and reel. this is after missing 3 in a row when fishing once by pausing

Hitting Bass straight away seems to be a common theme here lads? Do a fair bit of bait fishing and miss a fair few bites too. I have a terrible habit of waiting for a second rattle/set of rattles before striking. Probably wrongly it would seem.

i thought you had a habit of falling asleep and waking up to two fish sat beside you waiting to get the hooks taken out of them :lol: :lol: :lol:

I must have missed the second rattle..... :D I might add, its not the first time I've done that on a fishing trip. Albeit maybe not in as satisfying a situation. :D

I like to hold the rod and strike on first bite. Doesnt give the fish time to become aware of any weights etc and cause them to drop the bait. Very often they hook themselves anyway.
I do find that bass can become very wary when you use crab and sometimes the bites are very gentle plucks that can be easily missed. Especially if you are not concentrating and miss the one bass bite ye had all night. Hate that.

I'm fond of the old 'strike and miss' tactic :lol: Think from now on i'll just hold my rod, the finger kept firmly on the line then *bang* :lol:

with doggies i wait till third bite.. flatties, second bite.. and all other fish on the first bite... and if the hooks gets spat out.. leave it there for them to come back to it.. usually works too
