That looks like a 'Rays bream' for sure:

It had a deeply forked tail alright. Rays Bream... Never heard of it TBH. Didnt pick it up for obvious reasons but I would say it was around a pound to a pound and a half.

Bream

Hard to say from the photo. Did you notice a gold band between the eyes?

Fri Oct 13, 2006 10:45 am

Cant say I noticed to be honest but it was dark. I think phanover took a better pic with his camera (I used my phone as lost USB lead for mine) so maybe that will help. That pic of a rays bream looks very like it all the same. Are they common as I've never heard of them? It had a mouth full of really sharp needle like teeth if that helps.

boys i am pretty sure its not a bream at all. it looks to me like a deepwater fish look at the size of those eyes . i have seen this fish before but the name is not coming to mind. i will get back to you with the correct identification

I would say you are thinking of a hatchet fish which is similar:

what fish is this? raysbream

Hatchetfish! Steady!

No, I reckon it is a small raysbream also known as Atlantic Pomfret http://www.fishbase.org, which would account for the relatively large eye in comparison with the body. There seems to be a coloured band on it and the body shape is perfect for a sea bream. The size, colour and the strongly forked tail would also indicate a raysbream. You can check it on the species guide on the front of the website, listed as Atlantic Pomfret.

HTH...

Are these in any way common?

Fri Oct 13, 2006 1:33 pm

Just comparing the photo I took and the picture of the Rays Bream on the site.

http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/fish ... am%20(rays).htm

and here

http://www.angling.ukf.net/species/iduk.htm

It is almost certainly the same species. I'll upload the photo as soon as I can get my hands on a card reader. It says that there is no reports of them being caught from the shore, so it seems we had a fairly rare find. Thats one of the great things I love about sea angling, you never know what might turn up.

So do I get a brucey bonus for identifying it ? ;)

Fri Oct 13, 2006 1:47 pm

Comparing the two pictures i'd say it's a rays bream...but how did it get washed up in such good condition considering Garretstown can be crab central at times :?... the mystery continues :) at least you didn't try to claim you caught it  your way to honest Pete  :D
