Sloppy spigot!

Hi,
The spigot on my light surf rod has worn to the point where the two halves of the blank almost meet. I think this is due in part to my habit of taking it out of the rod bag, which contains a lot of sand, and hastily assembling the rod in my hurry to get into the surf, thereby giving the spigot a "wet & dry" sanding.
I have heard that candle wax can be used to build up the male part, but I would be concerned that this would merely serve as a more efficient way for me to introduce sand into the rod!
The other, more permanent solution I have heard is using graphite spray, which can apparantly be purchased from tackle shops catering for pole anglers.
Has anybody tried this, and if so, which spray did you use. How did you use it? Are there any potential pitfalls I would need to look out for?
Also, can anyone suggest a way to remove all the sand from my rod bag? I've sneaked it into the washing machine in among the socks but the sand is still there! I can't turn it inside out as its divided into 2 sections. Any ideas?

Yeah Graphite spray is your man. Leeda do it as far as I know. I know Henry's tackle has some in stock as I got a can off him a few weeks back. Its the best long term solution, just wear a mask when applying :lol:

hi there,i used the spray but in the end i preferred the candle.as for the rod bag put it in the airing cupboard to give it a good drying and then turn the bag upside down and give it a good shake.regards ivan

As bass boy says make sure it's 100% dry before you do anything. Another thing you can try is to put the long extention hose from the vacuum cleaner up the inside and suck the sand out while pulling out the hose. Might be worth a try?

If the rod is worth a lot to you it might be worth while sending it to a rod maker and getting a new spigot added to it.

I know its a bit late for you Johnny but for others when finished taking the rod out of the bag, put the bag away immediatly. When finished fishing give the bottom of the rod a wipe before putting it in the bag. Care and maintainance prolongs life.

I had the same problem once and coated the male part with Araladite, then wiped it off and let it dry. The thin film remaining was enough to restore the joint. A year or so later, I tried it again, but didn't wait long enough and glued to two halves together :oops: . What was worse, the rings didn't line up :(

Thats a gem mate......bet it was cold with the car window open in the winter too :lol: with 8ft or rod sticking out :lol:

Now did I tell you the one when I leaned out of the hatch of my boat and caught the pull cord of my inflatable life jacket on the edge? I wondered what all that wooshing sound was, until I found myself wedged stuck in the hatch with the jacket fully inflated......

graphite spray mate ,put it on in thin layers allowing each layer to fully dry before putting on another,check the fit after every layer is dry .

so where does one get this graphite spray from?????

its really useful used it on a few flyrods.the same stuff is used on mountrain bike frames for protecting the finished paintjob from wear afrom break and gear cables.

I've also slipped the rod bag into the airing cupboard, a dangerous operation! I'll try the vacuum cleaner trick next time she's out!
