need help with doggies...

hi lads,im going out for the day to try and catch my first doggie. the only problems i have is
1,what bait??
2,where will produce them in or close to dublin??
3,rigs??
4,what sort of fight do they give??
any replys are highly thankful

dont know about dublin - but no fight dead weight - best bet is try for something else.........and youll catch a doggie :wink:

1,what bait?? Mostly anything as long as there is fish in it, either mackerel or sandeel
2,where will produce them in or close to dublin?? unsure
3,rigs?? any rig. I use hooks from size 1/0 down to about a 2.
4,what sort of fight do they give?? Like a sac of spuds.

There are probably the easiest fish to catch at night.

Warning: When unhooking them make sure you grab the doggy by the tail and then by the head. If you don't they curl up and always manage to get your hand or arm. When I say get, they have a very rough skin and when rubbed over any part of you it can become quite painful after a while.

Basically they'll go for anything and you'll have a hard job avoiding them with mackerel and rag. You can catch them at any time of day but they seem to come out in force at dusk. Use a decent size hook purely for the reason that its easier to handle when unhooking as their mouths are very tough. A single hook trace is better cos its not much fun trying to unhook 2 or doggies at a time. This would be far from uncommon. Besides it would be like reeling in a sack of potatoes. fight wise I dont rate them. Basically they're like a real dog on lead and follow until ya get them near the front door or 30 yds out from which they put up a half hearted attempt at resistance. Of course you'll get the odd decent fighter.

Head down to Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey or Killiney in the evening

As for where to fish be sure to avoid getting off the Dart at Monkstown or you've gone way to far.

Go to the very end on the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire (furthest one from Dublin) and fish inside the harbour with as the lads have said mackeral/sandeel/squid and you'll definitley catch one. Nice big baits on a 2/0 pennel should give you one a cast!

I saw with my own eyes a guy catch Doggies on cooked pork chops and raw rashers.
I have seen a lot at the end of dun laoghaire pier but this was only Sunday two weeks ago.

You're nearly certain to catching plenty of Doggies on North Beach in Greystones. Mac is the best bait here..

hows it going if ya want doggies go to colliemore harbour.use a one hook flapper with a lump of macky your bound to get one.if that doesnt work spray wd-40 on the macky :wink:

why do you spray wd40 on the mack??(just curious)

How ya ian, i know the WD-40 trick sounds fishy :oops: but it actually works it's something to do with a fish oil that they use in the spray or at least thats what i've heard,but i've used this to speed up bites when i'm only out for an hour or two.

can you spray it on feathers and spinners and stuff like that??
