which reel

Hi everyone, i was wondering if ye might please give me some advice on a fixed spool reel, on which is a good make etc.. , it'll be going on a 10ft spinning rod i plan to use for bass and pollack.thanks

okuma make good cheaper models that would suit the type you are looking for. I'm sure other members of to forum will be able to give you more advice.

Im currently using a Jaxon which I bought a couple of months back for about 40 quid, its a nice enough reel but I'm not sure how it will stand the salt. Not a thing wrong with Okuma reels by the way especially given the price of them. I used an Okuma exide for 2 years for pollack bashing off the boat with no problems. They are available on ebay for about £6.00 to £12.00 most of the time :shock: Stay away from the likes of the Mitchell Avocets as they rust up in no time. If your going towards the other end of the market, then I guess it has to be Shimano. HTH.

um im all in support of shakespeare or abu garcia reels.but laser fish and jaxon also make nice reels

I just got a Shakespeare mustang with my new rod. Was priced at 30 euro but got it cheaper with the rod. Probably the best balanced reel for sea angling i've ever used. Can't be beaten for price IMHO.

I've used shimano spinning reels for years for bass. Currently using a stradic 3000m for 7 years. Never let me down. Never been serviced apart from light oiling. Not the cpeapest though. I also use a shimano bait runner 5000 for light ledgering and float fishing, also for bass. Also never let me down.

I'm currently using an Okuma Interceptor F/S baitrunner type version. Had it about a year now, came with a spare spool for under 30 quid, and i reckon it's great value for quality and price.

Well worth considering if the Shimanos are a bit too tasty pricewise.

Since I do quite a bit of pike fishing (suppose you guessed that from the forum name) I use a Shimano Baitrunner 6000GTE and a Shimano Beastmaster 300/330H when spinning for pike. This doubles up for salt water spinning and performs like a dream for pollack and bass as well as mackie bashing. Look out on E-Bay for bargains. The GTE series has been superseded by the new GTE-B so you could get a bargain.

The GTE-B series is pricey (less so on E-Bay) but is suposed to be saltwater resistant. I have a couple of GTE-B 8000's for pike fishing but I haven't tried them out yet on saltwater so I can't advise on this.

I have also used Okuma reels for spinning and these have performed very well and can be bought for a good price. The Interceptor is not a bad reel.

Whatever reel you buy make sure you rinse it with fresh water after use and give it a bit of TLC a bit of grease and oil.
