I've been trying up and over rigs recently for ray. I've been using the gemini srt springs with up and over clip but I find the top clip doesn't always up clip. Any advise?

Donagh instead of tying the up and over tie up the millenium rig. works very well for rays and dogs.

nearly all my fish are caught over snaggy ground when pleasure fishing using pulleys. For fishing cleaner ground i have been trying golds rigs but thought I'd try up and overs just to see if there was any improvement. I'd feel more confident using a longer trace and a penel with an up and over but for the issue I've already mentioned. Main disadvantages I can see with a golds rigs is the extra bait a few inchs up from the lead so casting might be slightly reduced and if a fish goes for the top hook the lead would be dragging along the ground. I have been crimping the top swivel with 1mm silicon tubing to get around the last issue. I also tried 2mm neopreone but that was to strong.
Does anyone else use up and overs or have any thought on these rigs?

Another rig i have used is a 2 hook clipped with the bottom snood not crimped so it slides down to fish below the lead. can als o be used on a 1 hook clipped. No affect on distance with this one. The only problem i have with the the up and over is that it has to release twice. which doesnt always happen

Donagh,
I had to give up using up and over rigs for fishing. Especially with larger baits, I found that they were unclipping or falling off the clip during the cast. Is this what is happening to you too?
Liam
Oh by the by lads what's a "golds" rig and a "millenium" rig or do I know them by another name?

Hi Liam,
The golds/portmouth/mellenium loop rig is just a one up 1 down with the top snood cipped to a cascade swivel that 6 inchs up from the bottom snoods hook. I think you were using the same rig the day I fished the SPA markwith you.
The up and over is either un clipping to early (sometimes just before casting) or if it's set to tight the top clip isn't unclipping. I'm going to retie the rigs after looking at the gemini web site as I think the top clip has be tighter to the top crimp. I'll let you know if I have any success.

I've used the up and over rig but whilst I've had no problems getting it to relase..the fishing performance has been poor. Was trying it with small hooks for plaice and the normal 2 hook clipped was outfishing it everytime. Still the spot I was fishing had virtually no tide run and i've a feeling the long snood wasn't extending properly on the seabed.

Was an issue for me a long time back, changed snood to heavy duty gear, sorted it. You've tried 2mm and no joy?
Interested to know if adjusting the clip made any diff, Donagh.

It would be another few weeks before I I retie rigs and go to somewhere I'd use them. I was using 25b snood but usually use heavy snood ray fishing. I'd like to have the option of using say a 30lb snood in competitions in case a heavy snood would put off dogs.
I was fishing with Gearoid McS from this forum who has had a very good success rate with very long up and overs. He uses a standard relay clip as the top clip and uses a a slightly shorter tha normal snood to take into account snood stretch.
