i quite often keep a box of frozen squid in my freezer in case i fancy a fishing trip and don't have the time to dig some ragworm. the thing is while i have caught a few fish on squid, i haven't caught the quantity i would hope for. is there anyone out there that swears by squid as bait?? i have a couple of days off this week and i know a great wee flounder spot but i was wondering whether i would be wasting my time trying squid for them. if anyone could reply i'd be grateful!! :)

have caught flounder on squid..
usually works best when using it to tip the hook, with mackerel or sandeel as main bait, but you can just use it and catch...
have also caught turbot on squid...
have found squid a very good bait for bullhuss later in the year..
other fish i've caught on squid include pollack, coalfish, dogfish, plaice, sea trout, gurnard, cod, whiting and thornback ray...

I agree with what steve has said excluding the sea trout and plaice as I havent caught them yet!

well thats give me a bit more confidence in giving it a crack for the flounder. i'll not get out to get any other bait now so i'll just have to go with strips of squid on their own. i've always swore by ragworm for flounder but i have caught them on strips of herring, mackerel so i'm sure that squid should be ok. thanks for the replies lads!!

If you are using squid strip by itself for flatties - Give the strip a Little spray of WD40

Ive caught plenty of good conger on squid, any type of jelly worms tipped with squid when spinning seem to improve catches of coalies, as I was the only one using this method on a boat one day where nobody else caught coalies and I landed over 10. Have caught flounder, dogs and whiting with squid aswell. Better to tip a worm bait to improve catches.

Caught the big fella on the left on Squid! Not much success re flatties though - worm baits always preferable. Squid is an excellent all rounder - particularly as it keeps so well frozen. Like yoursel I always maintain a box or two in the freezer. BTW, never purchase from Tackle shops - check out your nearest chinese food emporium - box of calamari squid (6-8) for €4, half the price (:-)
