This is something that annoys me slightly. The UK Hydrgraphic Office own the tidal harmonic data for Ireland, as well as some other countries, around the globe. They refuse to allow free use of this data by non-profit organizations. This data is freely available to use in the United States, and many other countries. Why should the UKHO be allowed to charge for the use of data describing a force of nature, especially since they have probably recovered their original costs maybe 100 years ago and these countries are outside the UK?
If the harmonic data was freely available, we could use programs such as XTide (
http://www.flaterco.com/xtide/) or WinXTide to calculate tides for whenever we want, for free.
I think there is some harmonic data available free from the Proudman Institute, if anyone is interested in generating their own free tide tables for a small number of large ports.
