Mackeral Feathers

Just something i have lying around in my box, i've never actually used them, was wondering if they'd be successful off rocks for say Pollack aswell? Or is it mostly only for Mackeral?

Got plenty of pollock on feathers from rock marks all over Donegal over this last few years. Bare feathers have produced mackeral, garfish, pollock, coalies and launce for me. Add a small strip of mackeral to each hook and you could definitely increase your success rate and also add a few more species to the list, including small ballan/cookoo wrasse, rockling and even a cod in Donegal Bay once.

when i was only a wee lad an old guy in Culdaff would make me up up three hook feather traces for Pollack. He made them up using White Goat hair(he swore this was the secret to them being so good.)
Constantly out fished any body near me on shore and boat, using these. Still have a set some where, try to find them and re line them.

Thinking back on this I'm going to make up some sets, even know where theres a white goat, but will he be willing to let me at him with a pair of scissors is the question. New traces or hospital........

lol... Get Bigphil over, he has experiance with that sort of thing. 8) :lol:

If you want even more fun, take a light spinning rod and a german sprat or similar. Much more fun. Ok you might catch less but on lighter tackle you will enjoy it more.

Food for thought :
One morning fishing a particular mark I saw a guy taking bass after bass on a spinner. They would not look at my hokeye's and I ended up asking the guy for a spinner which he was happy to provide. I took a bass on my first cast and 8 in total in a 20 min mad spell. Just something to think about.

Also one day last summer I saw one just cruising round Bunagee Pier (Culdaff) so I lobbed a free-lined mackeral strip right in front of his nose and he devoured it! Some fight off them, they are incredibly athletic, leaping a few feet out of the water!

Saw one landed at the pier in Moville too (the 1st pier you come to if travelling from the Derry direction) late last summer on a float-fished sand-eel intended for mackeral.

Apparently if you can get a slick of mackeral rubby-dubby and oil it will attract any garfish within the area and you can just free-line mackeral strips in the slick. Never tried this though.

Does indeed im sure if you get them around fanad youd get them of melmore head next point over from fanad....a species to try for this summer :shock: :D
