A trip out to Cape Clear Island is a must !
Anyone know anything about the ragworm farm ?
Has production started ? Can you buy ragworm directly at the farm ?
Thanks
Andy

As far as I know Andy that place has closed a year or so ago. Indeed they may be farming some other marine species, not 100% though.

Hey the Ragworm farm closed about two years ago! they have an abolony farm there its a type of shell fish, My girlfriends family live on the island and her cousin brought me down to the old farm to see if there was anything there but nothin but crab claws! The North harbour looks like it has lugworm though if you wanna bring a fork not sure how the locals would feel about you digging for bait though, you can get crabs and shrimp easily enough and also mussels and limpets etc!!! you cant buy any bait on the island, you will have to bring it with you or else use spinners/plugs and feathers.Hope this helps.

Oh yeah and there are monster pollock to be had ;)
Try the of the rocks at the north harbour using float gear with Mackeral or rag if you can get it! and theres big mullet in the harbour too, They seem to like bread which is easy enough to get :)

Yep, Ragworm farm is closed down. I used to work on it and it was some perk to test drive a few rag on an evening tide around Cape. There is great fishing to be had without rag though. German sprats, small lead heads or latex worms all work well. There is a very limited supply of lug in north harbour but you need a big tide. In south harbour under the hostel you can get crab in the rock. Try taking mussel with you for wrasse. Best place for pollack is on th south side of the island or the eastern end north of the slip. Ive had them over 10lb and lost more than I have landed. Enjoy your stay.

Thanks Caz
What went wrong with the ragworm-farm ? Not enough demand,
high transport costs ?
We will only be making a day visit to Cape Clear , so we
will miss the best fishing periods: dawn and dusk, but I
guess there are plenty of deep-water marks that fish well
around the clock !
Do you know if you can hire a bike on the island ?
Thanks and best wishes
Andy

Rag farm closed due to costs, transport live product etc. Not sure about bikes on the island. You could ask when you get there at the co-op office/information center. Its located close to the pier. Just ask anyone of the ferry workers and they will point you the right way. I'm sure you could hire bikes on the mainland and bring them to cape with you. Beware of the hills on cape though, their are something else. Even the cars have to take a run at one of them. There is an island taxi service. Again ask the ferry lads.
