Seriously lads, things are getting bad, i blanked tonight for about the 4th/5th consecutive time, if i didn't enjoy just being by the shore so much i probably would have given up by now! If any of the guys around the bangor area could give me some tips on somewhere decent it'd be appreciated. Tonight i went to the wee old pier thingy around Wilsons Point, was using two hook flappers with a few red / orange beads on each snood, had mackeral fillets for bait, didn't even get a sniff, i started off on a gripper lead as i thought there'd be some clean ground in the wee bay, however EVERY direction i casted got me into a snag! I managed to free it each time until the last one by which stage i was using an ordinary pear shaped 4oz lead, i lost everything from including the shock leader (now another dilema as Drew has always tied it onto main line for me, i'll need to learn the knot), when the line snapped the rod flew back and i even lost my wee bell on the top of the rod  . After this i just decided to stick on a silver spinner of about 2oz, i've always enjoyed spinning but no luck whatsoever and one poor cast put it in an area with about 15 yards of rocks in front of me, result was predictable, had to pack it in for the night! Maybe a spinner / lure would be more productive off the rocks opposite where i was, the famous spot for mack bashers in summer.
Meh.
Resiliance! :x

Hi Livid
Swop the treble on your lures for a single or double if you fish weedy or foul ground. Try surface poppers and shallow divers and soft plastic shads where the hook is presented on the top - its almost impossible to lose these as they bounce off the obstructions and snags. Almost!
As for the other fishing, I've been there recently m8. Fished for four hours in Ross into 60 + feet of water on an incoming tide all for a small rockling! Tried everything imaginable with no results. Fished several beaches and had nada. Keep a diary and write in what has worked and what has not on each mark - taking note of everything - tide, weather for the past few days, conditons, baits - and over time you will learn how and when and with what to fish each mark. I know a mark in belmullet that is fantastic for pollack in february and march, and c**p for three months after that - that runs contrary to everything you read but it is the truth!
The truth is out there... swimming around laughing at us!!!

losing the rod tip bells was a blessing in disguise for you livid!! if something is required for seeing the bites at dark use reflective tape on the rod tip, or else tape a starlight on, the bells give you a chance of catchin on them during the cast

Well i'm headin out tonight again, this time with Drew to D'dee pier, i'm optimistic, this run has to come to an end sometime. :P

scale your hook and line sizes away down, tyhat way you stand a better chance of something, even its small
Thu May 25, 2006 5:54 pm
your supposed to take the bells off before you cast then put em back on while you wait for a bite

Don't worry Livid - these things happen.
This is why it is called fishing and not catching.....
Keep the chin up - things WILL change.
