Im looking for a new rod to go with my 525 super mag.I had a fladen charter 14ft rod and it was a load of crap,it had no compression at all,i tried different weights from4-6 ounce and this did nothing.Basically the rod was as stiff as a poker. Now im looking for a 14ft+ rod that will get me the distance im capable of,and it also must have a nice price of between 100 and 200 euro.please help me

Hi Edward, Any of the Penn PPT evo1 range would suit you especially the Sidewinder although it's 13'6". Very user friendly will handle leads between 4-8ozs and in the right hands can cast miles. You can buy the PPT evo1 range without the supermag reel from any of the mail order firms in England. I bought the Sidewinder myself for £175 sterling from Gerry's. Hope this helps although you will find that all anglers have there favourites and what might be there faviourites might not suit you.

Sidewinder from veals is 150 sterling and I got mine last year in Limerick for 245 which is still out of your price range. I'm not an expert by any means and can get good distance with an off the ground cast but I only compress it when the cast is aerialised. It can still be lobed though its through actioned so you can't flick it from the tip. I'd think a softer actioned rod might be easier if your starting off. The surfblater outasite would be more in your price range if your after a penn. These are more all rounder or mixed ground rods so you may also want to go more for a clean ground or match rod since your fishing the east coast. I've always found Veals very good at giving advise of which rod to pick if you give them your expertise, ground to fish and price range.

I bought the Penn surfblaster outasite + 525 supermag from veals a few months ago for £200 .I think its about £95 for the rod on its own .Others may differ but i think its a fantastic rod for the money.

Hi,
My mate just bought a Penn Viper for €220. I believe it's the baby brother to the sidewinder... Lovely bit of kit really nice. Would like to have one myself. Will still chuck 6oz with ease

Hi,
You can pick up a 12ft Daiwa Supercast Power Multiplier for 225 euro in a Dublin shop (it’s the new model, not the Supercast –X). Lovely rod. Not terribly keen to give the name of the place owing to the recent fuss! PM me if you want the details. He also has a selection of rods marked as half price. I think there was a Penn Venom in there somewhere, although most of them were in the half price bin for a reason! i.e. they are pretty crap!
A lot of the rods suggested will probably be slightly outside your price range - believe me you are better off holding off for a month or two, and saving a few more quid. It could mean the difference between an ok rod, and a great rod that you will be delighted with for years to come.
Steve.
