just wondering would anyone have an estimate for the species records in the shannon or what they would be likely to be?

I have a picture of Robert from this forum with a double figure cod from the estuary taken when he was hardly into double figures himself. Angling Times published a report a number of years back of a conger over 60lb taken by one of their staff members. I've witnissed rockling of 2.5 pounds, stingers of 35lb, huss just under 16lb. There was a big specimen tub gurnard recorded from Poulnasherry a few years back and a huge stinger around 50lb landed in the same area in a competition by a prominent Leinster angler. The fish stung him and the popular rumour was that the angler was ok but the fish died !

I haven't been knocking around in the estuary to long but have seen a few nice fish. Our club secretary had a 35lb sting ray from pounasharry a few years back and the year before that there was 54lb sting ray taken from the cappa shoreline. Neilus had an 8kg thornback from carrigaholt in a comp on a bass rod a 3 years back. Plenty of specimen fish have been taken in the competitions over the years but from talking to the club members the amount of fish caught in the competitions has dropped considerably along with the amount of big fish. Many of the competitions we have now result in only 2 or 3 fish where as before 20 to 40 fish which would of included a few really big fish would of been needed to win a comp.

God that was back in 1995 now that I think of it Brian. Me, I am convinced the Conger record from the shore will be smashed some day from Money point, there are monsters there.

Last year there was talk of us having competitions from the jetty itself which I believe is in 120 foot of water but with the works in moneypoint we're not being let in there this year and we may never get back in. Some of the more senior members have seen 40lb plus specimens swimming in around the coalyard which is comparitively shallow. The biggest fish I've seen caught at the coalyard there was 25lbs but that was in daylight.
