Anyone care to donate to a fund to get a deck gun for B0ogalo's boat?

Pat,

You mean he hasnt got one....hes got everything else on that boat

Serious though.....its sad to see skippers coming in that close, you got to believe its greed and nothing else, something does need to be done about it before its to late ( late may be already here though)

With rising fuel costs you'll see a lot more boats trying to scrape a living close in....

It's long past time this country woke up to what the commercials are at and recognised the potential of the coastline for recreation and tourism. At the very least a 1 mile no netting zone right around the coast needs to be set up.

We're not asking for commercial fishing to be banned here - just keep them off the beaches, for God's sake....

They already have the next 199 miles to tow the hell out off.....

It gets Worse

Fishing Easkey Pier last week and lots of small Pollack being caught on feather/shrimp rigs, when I say small we're talking less than 1lb here - largest I saw was maybe 10-12 oz. Local said that he had been asked last year to let a local trawlerman know when these appeared. Sure enough, trawlerman heads out and sweeps them all up. Apparently he made a fortune selling them in Dublin, small Pollack now a "delicasy" in Dublin Restaurants

seen a huge trawler out in red bay between the pier and the ledges yesterday too.

probably cleaned this area out but there hasnt been much to catch here recently either :(

What sort of fish is the boat trawling for then?,don't know that area too well myself.

Probably whatever he could get, its a clean sandy bottom all along that beach. Unfortunatley the rays are just starting to show in the Swilly, hopefully he didnt get any .

I've never heard the word 'B*****d' used so many times in a string of Sentences than the amount you used it on Saturday, lol

its guys like that towing as close as that, that really make my blood boil mate.the only person this guy cares about is himself ,not that there where many fish there but we did not see what he brought in and he was there before us so he could have been towing most of the day.

Mon Apr 24, 2006 6:24 pm

Thats very true mate... 2 Mile Trawling ban, Including all inlets, Loughs and Estuaries should be in force...

Mon Apr 24, 2006 6:50 pm

i agree with all above but think the exclusion zone should be even more , have seen this happen before, on leel strand achill island, could easily have put a lead or two through his widows on the cab, it put pay to our ideas of a turbot and flounder bash on that holiday any way!! you did the right thing photographing it though, it all helps to build a package to present to the powers to be to fight this madness!!

Perhaps is it best to avoid Port Salon for the time-being. There is a rumour abroad that the Irish Army was called to remove two unexploded torpedoes from the beach at Port Salon on Saturday 23 April. Apparently, the firing mechanism was was live but army sources are believed to have reported that the torpedoes did not detonate as they beached on the sand.

The source of the torpedoes is a mystery but two vessels (one a commercial vessel allegedly illegally fishing close to the shore) was reported to have been in the area on Saturday. A member of the crew of a non-commercial vessel was reported to have recorded an unusual event as he was photographing the commercial vessel illegally fishing less than 100 metres off the beach at Port Salon. This coincided with what appeared on the vessel's fish-finder as a slow-moving whale and two large, very fast moving fish swimming towards the commercial fishing vessel.

The objects in the bottom right of the photograph which are seen to be approaching the fishing vessel are not believed to be fish or marine mammals.

Investigations into the mystery are ongoing.

Sandman, I may be able to help Boogaloo with the item you mentioned. I had the mini U-Boat out for a spin off North Donegal at the weekend and did a bit a damage to it after getting tangled in a fishing net off Port Salon. The boat is laid up at home and will not be operational for a week or more.

I have taken the deck gun off during repairs and it's lying in my garage. If any of you guys want to borrow it for a week or so to do a bit of target practice off North Donegal let me know.

I heard that Lidl might be doing a special offer on Bofors deck guns next week.

Check the pic below for details.

I think the offer might be limited to the Rep. of Ireland but it might be worth a look. The item comes with an ammunition pack (100 x 50mm rounds) but I think they are also selling the ammo packages as well.

Top Pic Esox, anyone fancy having a go at recommissioning a couple of the "Guns of Dunree"... Would be a fantastic way to while away a few hours of an afternoon taking potshots at trawlers :D . We could get a little league going....
