upgrade reels need advice again lol (penn reels)

I use a 7ht for clean ground and a sealine X 30SHV (new slosh)

I was told and have read that even the penn 525 gs will cast better than both.

I started to look at these penns and came across 2 and I'm very lost again.

Penn 525 GS and the Penn Mag 525

I Found a on line shop selling both and price about 40 sterling different. But I'm now lost as another shop sells the penn mag at price of gs model. could i be reading it wrong are the gs and the mag same reel they don't look same but just me as easy to get lost lol.

I have even heard there is a super mag i like look of the mag 525 and may go for these but don't want to make a mistake.

are these any good on rough stuff as well as the beach work.

The last reel I bought was 525 Supermag - great reel for both rough and smooth ground.

It'll pull the plug out of the sea and still hit 200yds + with a good cast.

I also have 2 x ABU6500 CT Sports Mags but the Penn beats both of them....

I highly recommend the Penn 525 Supermag.

Im going to Agree with Gavin, Get a Supermag, Get to the Casting meets, Learn to use it, Properly, and foreword your casting, and your Angling considerably. 8)

525 mag/Supermag all the way, they are virtually the same anyway. Had Slosh30, 6500mag elite, got rid of both, now use 525 mag and a supermag, cant fault them at all. Just wish I'd bought these first, they are the easiest of the lot to just pick up and use out of the box, a super piece of engineering.

right pookie, basically in the penn shore multipliers you have a wee family!
525 and 535 - 525 general beach/rock size, 535 real rough ground size
GS - the cheapest of them, with a centrigul braking system (no magnets) black and silver in colour ,roughly around £70 each
magslidy- the original '525mag' with magnetic braking, all black and gold in colour and was roughly around £100, now its been changed a little and is called the 525gsmag (looks the same as the gs but has the magnetic slidy magnetic brake end plate)
the 525supermag is the latest and easiest controlled addition to the family with more bearings etc and runs a little slower tahn the others as it comes with red label rocket fuel in the bearings, the others seemed to go better on yellow label (faster). its around £125
then you have the 525magT (tournament or 'knobby' )mag. it has a knob control rather than a slidy control and is more aimed at tournament casters rather than angling.(circa £150)
the 535mag is basically the same as the 535gs but only it has a knobby magnetic braking system fitted, again its around £100.

What do you want to do with the reel? You can spend a lot of money on equipment to get the latest and greatest, but still not be happy because it does not do what you want. If you are looking for a new reel to increase your distance, is this for fishing or for distance casting? If you are looking at distance casting, then I would suggest you look toward the Abu 6500 Mag Elite or the 7ht you have, as they are an easy reel to grow with, but I would not recommend them as the best all round fishing reels. The 30SHV you have will be more than capeably of handling the rough stuff and should be capeable of some good distances at the same time. If you're not getting the distance (over 150 yards) with either the 7ht - which is a good reel for distance - or the X30SHV, then you might need to revise your casting as both reels should be well capeable of casting that far. I would agree with part of Drew's comment - "Get to the Casting meets, Learn to use it, Properly, and foreword your casting, and your Angling considerably."

One other thing - have you tuned your reels? By this, I mean have your cleaned and oiled your bearings and set up your centrifugal blocks? The type of oil you use will affect your distances, as will the type of blocks you are using. If you have the 2 red block in the reel will be slower than using 1 red block or the 2 smaller blocks.

Definitely saying, for all round user friendlyness the 525 Supermag is hard to knock

Just been offered a reel its the penn mag but he says he has added this and that and made inside same as a supermag read add below and tell me is it possible to do this. price 65 for the reel seems good to me.

Fantastic conditioned Penn 525 mag hardly used in excellent condition has had a full strip down and service and has my extra magnetic braking kit added to give it the same upgraded braking as the 525 Supermag so is now so much more reliable giving far less chance of overruns .The reel is in hardly used condition its like new see the photos why pay £125 for a supermag ?

not ebay so seems safe to me just like to know can this be done

Pookie, only difference in braking between the two reels is that the 525 has four magnets and the supermag has six. The setup inside of them seems to be identical with the extra 2 mags sited on the reverse of the slider behind the main 4. I actually removed the 2 extra mags from my Supermag as there was no need for them, plenty of braking on a standard 525 to be honest. "Extra Magnetic Braking kit".....all that is is 2 little mags, thats all. On saying that though, its still a super reel. 65 quid for a VGC 525 isnt bad to be fair.

just a word of warning, the abu sports mag may not be the most user friendly after a few trips to the beach, heard a few guys saying that the sand can clog and jam the plastic adjustment disc on the side, if going for an abu i would advise the 6500 mag elite, either the green one or the florida orange 'premium' one.

Hi lads and thank you for the great advice as always thanks to forum and advice i have over my first year in sea angling learnt loads. Next step casting meet and learning with them.

As for reel choice i took the penn mag with the upgrade to a supermag iam aware not much between the mag and supermag but ended up getting the reel for 60 and the upgraded parts should help with casting untill i get used to it. Iam now on look out for a second mag or supermag even thinking of the 535 for the rough stuff or will the mags do job.

Iam going to hold of on rod change until i get some coaching on casting.

No need to step up to a 535 Pookie, a 525 is more than capable of handling pretty much anything from the shore.

true, though the only real need for the 535's are if you are fishing any mark that is really deep and if you need loads of 30lb line on it, hit the problem at one of the marks i have fished from the rocks in donegal where i emptied a 525 of 20lb line by the time it hit the bottom!!!

Christ Phil..!!!! Care to share that with me? Only spots I know like that are in West Clare and the fishing can be nothing short of superb.
