Introducing a child to fishing

Hi,

I wonder can someone help me. I am bringing a my 10y/o brother in law fishing at the weekend for his first time. My idea was peir fishing, plenty of small species to keep him entertained for the day. However, I am not sure what good marks there are for peir from south dublin to waterford, as I haven't been on a peir in years.

Is dun laoighre still any good, is greystones and arklow still polluted? etc etc....

any help will be greatly appreciated.

dunlaoghaire is the safest bet. West pier ( the one ppl dont use to walk as much) and fishing off the end back into the harbour. no need to climb the wall as there should be a flattie a throw. Ragworm is best on on size 1 hooks. I find that slack water on a low tide is best for some reason. You wont catch anything big but should keep you entertained with small whiting and flounder.

Thanks Liam. You have confirmed my thoughts on this one so. As I said earlier, haven't been on a peir in years. I was a member of Dublin Telesport, Kestral SAC and Clondalkain Pike Anglers club but since those days I have moved around alot and am slow getting back into it.

With a bit of luck, this summer I will start to stock up on fresh tackle and gear and get going again.

Another option would be a safe rock mark in dry calm weather, casting in close among rocks and weed for wrasse. They give a great thump and are interesting fish. Not the best option for the frying pan mind you :shock:

I don't fish for them specifically myself but I've caught some fairly predictably directly behind the castle at Cahore Pt and it's fairly safe mark in dry calm weather. You might need your golf shoes to get down the grassy slope. Just don't tell anyone I sent you.

You should get down to Lidl and get a spinning outfit for the kid,there were still some yesterday when I looked in the one in Walkinstown,D12.

There is a trout fishery near me and I popped into the tackle shop. Picked up a nice 7ft shakespeare spinning rod and a reel with a little bit of tackle for about 40 euro....not bad price.

Does anyone know of any bait shops I can call into on sunday morning for some rag. I will be coming from Kilkenny area towards dun laoighre. The bait shop in kilkenny, hook, line and sinker, has closed down.
