Hi, I've decided to target conger before the winter sets in and plan to fish Dun Laoghaire since it looks most likely to produce. I want to fish inside the harbour since getting fish over the rocky shelf on the outside is a nightmare, but don't know where to start. Anyone have any tips on where to try inside the harbour? Is there a way to help avoid seals as I can see them being a pain while trying to fish with half a mackerel. Any tips or help is appreciate. P.S I don't care if the congers are only straps I'm just looking to catch a few no matter the size.

Let me know how you get on, I’d like to try it myself

If your going to fish the inside i recommend the east pier. Fish at either the very end or the bend closest the end. You can use a beach caster but personaly i use a boat road dropped in about 5 yards out with a big mackeral bait and a rotten bottom on your lead. A drop net is usefull as hauling up eels results in a lost fish.
I find spring tides are best and any wind but easterly, night will produce more.
Iv caught plenty of congers here up to 20lb and seen other anglers with fish to 40lb. Im told greystones harbour holds them aswell but iv never tried myself. Hope that helps

Thanks for the info DubPredator3 ill give the east pier a try soon. I took a short trip to Howth on monday night since I didn't have time to go to Dun Laoghaire and started at the small lighthouse on the little pier which sticks out at the end of the west pier. while i was feathering away on a second rod I heard the drag go on the conger rod but nothing was there when I picked it up. I eventually moved to the rocks in the corner near the end and within 10 minutes had a thump on the rod and the line went slack, picked up the rod and instantly felt another thump but nothing after. when i reeled the bait in the mackerel head looked chewed and one of the eyes was popping out so something had it. After that the crabs came on the feed which had me picking up the rod every 5 minutes due to the strong knocks they were giving on the rod so I packed up and called it a night. going to try Dun laoghaire next so hopefully I have more luck there and land my first conger.
