supermag problem

how goes it?
i recently switched from a fixed spool to a 525 supermag and have found it to be pretty decent. the trouble is sometimes when reeling in a heavy load (weed mostly, the odd corpse, a few shopping trolleys)the handle will spin back around a couple of turns, i think the anti reverse is not kicking in. is this the norm? anyone had similar problems or have any advice?

Have had similar probs meself with the original 525 mag (after I dropped it on the kitchen floor). Just have to allow for it and remember to give a small wind when you knock it off free spool.

Think I have a similar problem with one of mine. After casting and I kick it out of freespool I have to give the handle a turn to get the reel to engage. Wonder is it easily fixable....

I had a problem with antireverse not engaging until I turned the handle because I didn't put the metal ring that holds one of the spool bearings in the right way around after tuning one time. After turning it around proble was fixed.

Take out the antireverse bearing and wash it out in lighter fluid and re oil it very lightly with wd40 and refit it .Happens to me some times, sand can get in between the needle bearing not allow it to move to the side.

thanks for the replies folks, but...
it is knocked out of free spool when this happens, i could have reeled in about 20 or 30 turns of the handle and stopped to check my footing or whatever and the handle will spin back like i said. its not a major problem, its just i'd like to know its not going to worsen. at the moment im putting it down to teething problems. as for taking the reel apart and checking the ins and outs im not that brave. i know id get it back together and have bearings and washers lying on the table.

Surely you could send that back to Penn?

although sometimes a small drop can damage them, sometimes it helps fix them too! best advise to get someone who knows what they are at to have a look at the reel for you.

just to pick up on something you siad under no circumstances oil a bearing with wd40 it is a freeing agent.if you leave it in a bearing it will disolve and dry out destroy the bearing i repair a lot of customers reels that have bearings destroyed by wd40.after cleaning bearings in lighter fluid some people spin them on a matchstick dont unless you have applied oil.spinning dry bearings destroys them.buy red rocket fuel or something similar.only use wd 40 on a cloth to clean the outside of a reel.

maybe there could be a slight problem with the reel maybe it just needs serviced i know my 525mag was in a bad way inside when i got it tho it was 2ed hand had sand and salt in it but the grease was 100% pen stuff it was green. can i ask you a question how long have you had the reel and have you ever serviced it i do mine abut once every 2 months or less and a top tip for you use wd40 to clean in side that's what i do it leaves it spotless and simply wipe the wd40 of before you put in your reel oil and another thing when your taking your reel apart make sure that you have a small dish to put the parts in if you got your reel 2ed hand chances are that you do not have the schematics for the reel so i will leave you a link to them OK you can print them as long as you have adobe reader 6 upwards

Maybe Im at Fault here, But did I not hear somewhere that WD40 was Bad for Casting Reels? Maybe Im wrong like... :?

not if you use it right i take my bearings out before i wd40 it. wd40 is excellent for cleaning things and will have your reel like new just as long as you remember to put the red stuff on the Bearing's IF you can afford it but your Bearing's in a small glass and put the red rocket fuel in the glass and fill until the Bearing's are covered (and put the magnets up full for the first cast or two)

There's nothing in the 525 to fall out if you do take it apart. Just make sure you have a screwdriver that fits the screws properly. I've seen a lot of people use any old screwdriver to undo or tighten a screw and if it's in bad condition, they damage the screw head or the driver slips out and scratches something. Just make sure the screwdriver tip is clean cut and in good nick before you use it.

I have to agree with Ian on this one. There is not a lot that can fall out of a 525 if carefully taken apart. If you are really unsure take a digital photo of each step.... that way you will be able to track back what you have done. Also, do all the work in one evening. It's very hard to remember where a part goes the next day, especially the first time the reel comes apart. The schematic provided will help also. Make sure you print it and have a copy on the table where you are working. Slow and steady and you'll be fine.
