sl30sh vs SLX30SHV

Thu Mar 09, 2006 11:38 am

whats the significant difference between the old sl30sh and the newer SLX30SHV

Thu Mar 09, 2006 12:04 pm

The most significant mod is the new casting design. Daiwa built these reels so that, once in free spool, the spool is completely separated from all the gearing so there is nothing to slow the spool down, it's floating free and supported by ball bearings.

Come to think of it though, aren't they all once the spool is disengaged??

not certain but i think tat in some reels they are still attached to the mail pinion, which i should think would effect both the start up inertia of the reel when casting and the centrifugal force during casting, possibly decreasing casting??
would you feel they are a superior reel worth investing in?

For the rough fishing you're doing, the drag may be improved, bt the old SLH drag was good anyway. You've already said that distance is not so important to you, so on that basis, no. SLH reels are pretty cheap on e-bay. I bought both mine on e-bay and they were as good as new.

have one of the origionals alrite. suppose i havnt had any trouble wit it so i suppose if it aint broke why fix it

I have one of the origianls bought the month they where released to the uk market many years ago and it still runs like new. I use it for 12lb class boat work and heavy shore stuff, its more than capabile for both and also casts well too, I`ve put leads down over 220 with it in tournaments.

marty have you tuned it or set it up in any specific way to achieve this.

Nothing more than a normal clenaing of the bearings in petrol followed by some light oil (singer sewing machine oil) and one small fibre brake block. Loaded with .35 mainline and away you go.

I use the SL20 and 30 SH lots, my most used reels. I looked into this when I was buying new ones and decided to stick with the SH as distance wasn't an issue. I believe I read somewhere that the older model is slightly tougher anywas so for rocks/heavy work etc I stick with them and save a few quid.

What's wrong with them?
What condition are they in?
