Loading Braid onto a Fixed Spool Reel

Fri Jun 30, 2017 1:04 am

Hi all
Thinking of picking up some Braid to use on one of my beach reels, have either spiderwire smooth, Berkley whiplash or power pro in mind. Just wanted to know how you would go about loading it onto a spool, how much mono backing to use etc.
Don't know much about it
Thanks in advance

The only way to get the exact right fill of backing is to load your braid onto a spare spool first then fill with the mono backing. Don’t fill all the way to the lip as this can cause problems when casting. Leave a small gap.

If you have two of the same reel it's easier. You just transfer from the spare reel on to the reel you want it on and the braid will be nicely filled to the lip. It’s best to load it under tension, some folk even wet it to aid with this. What I do is set the drag on the spare reel so that there’s some pressure when loading it to the reel I want it on. If you don’t have a spare spool of the same reel, you could ask the tackle shop if they can give you a hand with it.

Alternatively, you can fill your spool as above (braid first then mono backing) and transfer to whatever other reel you or a mate has that will hold the same capacity so the braid is at the lip. Then you need to transfer that to another reel again (I know) so that the backing is at the lip of that reel. Finally you can then load it on to your reel of choice.

That’s how I do it. Could be totally wrong and long winded. See if anyone else has any suggestions to make it quicker.

Like I say though a friendly tackle shop can be great aid with this if they have the same model reel in stock.
