New from MAYO

Sun Jun 04, 2017 4:04 pm

I'm new to the sea fishing. Iv caught 1000's of pollock and mackerel. I'm looking to catch something else maybe some flat fish and tope I have everything needed to handle small to big fish. If anyone can help me with some rough ideas of where to go it would be really appreciated. Thanks

any beach in mayo will give you flounder if you want some flatfish - tope is another matter, info hard won

any seaward beach in mayo will give you flatfish - flounder, small turbot and very occasionally small brill. It might be a bit late for dabs and they prefer sheltered bays.

Off the rocks, you should get all the species of wrasse (4) and conger eels, Smaller species include sculpin (two species) and another two species of rockling (shore and 3 bearded, never seen a five bearded in Mayo).

Some of the inshore marks are now full of rays and you will pick up dogfish and bull huss as well now. That should be enough to keep it interesting!

Tope is another matter - only ever had one off the shore, donkeys yeas ago, at the mouth of the Moy when I was targeting the supposed large bass that feed there... but I reckon there are locations where they can be caught.

Thanks guys iv had loads of dogs find it extremely difficult to have a bait in the water without 1 of them taking it. Would ye recommend lug or mackerel for flats

lug wold be the normal preference for flounder dabs however a strip of belly (silver) mackerel is the best bait of turbot - guaranteed to find them.
