The beach from the pier out to the river and a little bit further had be worth a cast after dark - throws up flats and the occasional sea trout.
Pier is very tidal. Need to fish top three hours of the tide, either side of HW to have a chance. Flats with scorpions and strap congers close in. This time of year you are going to find it hard work. Small codling and whiting have been known to come in after dark. Have not fished it in years, not a great mark.

Yes, its shallow and very safe. Good idea to do a quick survey at low water to try and locate some of the very shallow banks and gullies that will hold fish. It will help.
Most people fish into darkness on a coming tide in and around the small outflow from the river near the town. The main quarry are flatties and sea trout. Flatties will mostly be flounder. On occasion I have heard people picking up whiting on very calm nights. I am told that you can pick up the occasional pollack and coalfish too, the latter especially after dark. Nothing huge. Mackerel strip will work fine. Save the ragworm for day light. Belly mackerel strip will find any small turbot and there's the chance of a decent sized one. I don't think the line of rocks near the town makes a lot of difference, but it might improve you chances on some species. A fall back and don't be afraid to try the pier. It gives access to far deeper water and can attract predators looking for small fish and offal and the like...
Been years since I fished it. Rebait every 10 minutes religiously and keep the baits and hooks small to stay active, no more than 2s. Dogs can be bait robbing gits!
Hope this helps...
