Cullenstown and Ballyteigue Loch

Wed Jun 22, 2016 4:53 pm

Well lads does anyone have some info on fishing in this area? I heard you can spin at the mouth of the estuary for bass and fish for flounder further up it, can I bait fish from the mouth of it to the western side? What would I expect around here?
PMs are greatly appreciated and will be kept with upmost secrecy, it's not like I know a lot of people anyway
Thanks lads

theres a spot in it were theres a few boats tied up its down a lane way think its called the coal yard its good for big flounder but have only fished it durning the winter months. you jump over a wall at the end of the lane way and fish around 100 yards down or further. i met a local down there before plugging and he said you can get sea trout and bass with the bigger fish being caught a low water. crab was the best bait but got a few of the flounder on mackeral and lug as well.

Thanks for that, the mouth of the estuary looks like a good spot, quite deep! Has anyone had hounds off Cullenstown itself or should I venture towards Kilmore for them?

Cullenstown is a stony beach something like Greystones/Kilcoole there is some vegetation on it making it possible to drive partly towards the mouth of the estuary .It a bit dangerous as the outflow runs very very fast out to sea the beach is ok to fish from but not as many bass caught along it best time is when a good surf is pounding and just fish close in tight to the edge steep drop off along here. The outlet itself is a more dangerous place to be as you have to wade through the very fast running outflow to get on to the sandbar you can only do this about an hour before low water time when the tide starts to turn only about a 5/10 meter wide waist high crossing make the most of your time fishing here as you only have about 2/3 hours before you have to get back over to the beach for safety hope this covers this for you.

Is this the spot at the end of the laneway?

Do people fish with lures here or nearer to the mouth?
I'm also aware of the agreement on banning fishing in the loch from December 1st to March 1st

No thats Lacken its further towards the beach theres a white wall just at the turn down think it might have been an old boat yard cause theres a few old boats there. I've seen lads plugging there when fishing for flounder. they were using smallish plugs think there are a few sea trout along the stretch also.

Think they call it the coal yard! Fuel was distributed by boat quite a while ago.

Ah I've found it on the map, I see the yard and the boats, thanks. Since there's sea trout as well as bass here, do I need a licence just in case someone sees me with one? I'm no sea trout aficionado, I'd just like to catch a bass on a lure in the loch.

Yeah I think I've heard of that name before, that page is interesting!
Thanks

Youll be grand if you're targetting bass no bailiff could reasonably try and claim you were after sea trout. The lures for bass are far larger than the sea trout ones.

Thanks, I'll be sure to use bigger lures. I'm not sure on what plugs to get (don't want to spend too much money either) but I have a german sprat, a dexter wedge and a few big spinners and plugs, will they do?

Fellas in your area would advise on the best lures but if you put something shiny past a hungry basses nose I would be surprised if they didn't go for it.

If I were to buy one lure: feed shallow!

I fished Cullenstown and the Coal Yard today, no fish but the weather was lovely. The mouth of the estuary looks good to fish at low water, although I was there at HW!
Lots of weed, and wind so headed up to the coal yard to cast some lures, nothing doing although I saw a sea trout jump clear of the water further out near the sandbar! I just fished out from the end of the yard, wasn't sure where to go although I'd say again it's best at LW. will have to give it a shot with bait!

Ye when I was speaking with a local down there he said low water was best because the bigger fish dont move out to sea they just stay in the channels. if your fishing the coalyard with bait go down around two hundred yards to the left crab and lug are the best baits but ive only ever fished it during the winter.
