Wicklow evening tide friday

Wed Feb 22, 2006 6:49 pm

hi all, just wondering if anyone could suggest a mark to fish on friday evening between greystones and wicklow. im specificaly targeting cod/codling as im trying to mark them off the species list for this year. Hopefully with the easterly breezes this week mite get a bit of success.
I fished the new pier in wicklow town last saturday had 6 whiting (2 were decent) any body know if this has produced codling at this time of year?
thanks

Hi G walsh,

We have had north easterlys all week and unfortunately that tends to kill the fishing on the East coast as it leaves the water gin clear. If it was south or direct East I would say try Newcastle or Killoughter for a few Codling but with those conditions you would want to be getting into some rough ground. Try either the top end of North Beach Greystones on the ebb or my personal choice would be to give Ballygannon(rocky outcrop between south beach greystones and Kilcoole) a bash but do not even attempt it unless you have a few peelers and sandeel. The resident red Codling will take the sandeel if you cast into the kelp there and the shoaling codling will take the crab. Its best to fish the last hour of the ebb and first two hours of the flood there, so that will put you around 1-4pm. You will get fish all the way up the flood but that is the peak time there for them. Also the tide will be quite slack so you should in theory pick up a few coalies in close on frozen/fresh mussel.

Tight Lines,
Rob.

thanks for your advice rob, i think ill give the ballygannon mark a bash over the weekend, sounds like the most likely spot to try and pick up a codling, (Henrys should hopefully have some peelers)
I presume you use them on a penell rig fished on the bottom?
anybody fished the pier in wicklow with any success at this time of year?

Henry should have some peelers alright, might have to order them in advance as there is a few comps on this weekend.

I use fairly standard traces, no need to use pennels to be honest as the ground in parts may be snaggy and you will only increase tackle losses with extra hooks, try a see-sea wishbone, always works well there.

Wicklow pier has been fishing well, i have been out there the last 2 weekends plenty of doggies about and had a lots of small mackeral(which make good eating!) Best baits are mackeral and squid, Wouldn't bother with henrys as he is a con merchant! better of getting your gear in rorys fishing tackle of temple bar(probably the worlds best known fishing shop!!)

I have heard Killoughter is fishing extremely poor at the moment but I am open for correction on that. If not it would be worth a bash, sandeel, lug, maddies, frozen mussel, peelers would all be good to have. I would fish either straight out at the gate or go down about 600m south on the beach.

May be a few whiting, dabs and flounder, and it will be very scratchy, 3 hook flapping with size 2" or less!!

And as for the Rory's comment above, this is a SEA ANGLING site!!!
