Fish ID + Is this a bass?

Hi all, I'm currently holidaying in Lanzarote and went down to the rocks to fish for a bit. I used bread on the float and caught this:



I also caught this on a lure. I don't think that bass frequent Lanza so I'm not sure:





Caught on my first cast of the lure!
I know it's blurry but it was in the heat of the moment. My mark was getting beat by giant waves from a passing ship!

The mark I was on was swarmed by tiny fish and some black fish with nice blue fins.
Will report on other catches!

I'd be fairly sure the first fish is a boga which is in the sea bream family.

Second is definitely a bass !

God, a rubbish one I didn't plan on fishing as the thought of a licence put me off it, but I bought a real cheap (€25) telescopic rod that came with a few cheap lures and a float. The lure looks like a tiny bass tbh, I was shocked to catch it as I had tested it out in our villa pool and all the colours washed off

The locals live bait the bogas for bonito this time of year... coughs ... think mackerel only 6-12 kilos. Magic on spinning gear.

I was told that bass were not native to the Canaries (I was unable to confirm this). Apparently there was an escape of bass from a fish farm a few years ago (there was a farm between Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero). The farm no longer exists. There was concern about what effect the bass would have on the local fish. You can see the odd bass swimming with the mullet by the boardwalk in P del C.

According to http://www.fishbase.orgthe bass is native to the Canary Islands, but an escape of captive fish would have the same impact as the salmon escapes here... the islands being sea mounts its unlikely the escapees would have the same latitude to roam as they would here, so its possible the impact is more concentrated?

That would definitely be something I would try, but I didn't bring any gear with me, I only have a very cheap spinning rod that I bought. Maybe next year!

They love bread too. I dropped a couple of pieces in and they swarmed over! I'm using size 7s, should I go smaller? I can't seem to hook them up!

I would give a smaller hook a try, buy a few big prawns from a fish stall in one of the big market stores.
Fish a bit of the bottom to about 3/4 .
we normally feed a bit of groundbait, odd small ball now and again.
I would be more of a match angler that sea angler BTW , always happy just catching the odd fish

Nah, bait still robbed, I managed another boga, otherwise my bait was robbed, those damsel fish are snakes
The light tackle is great craic!
Leaving for home tomorrow but dyin' to try out my lures for pollack on Friday
