How to bait black wraps properly?

Hi I'm using black wraps and size 1/0 and 3/0 and I thread about 5-6cm of black wrap onto the hooks and tie it up with elastic. After a few casts they slide down to the end of the hook and deposit there. Am I doing it wrong? Thanks

Dab, flounder etc. but tbh I'm looking for anything, primarily those two.

Something I like is the support hooks - 2 barbs on the back length of the hook, they help hold the bait and if you can get the elastic into them they hold better - Also leaving a bigger tag end on the snood to help hold them is another little trick - Wrapping the black to a very thin piece of nice tough squid at the bottom is yet another little trick - squid if tough stuff!! A small piece around the eye of the hook and wrapped above and below usually works for me.
Your not doing anything wrong exactly, you'l just get better at doing it.

3/0 hooks are over kill for dabs and flounder that size are for the likes of Ray and hounds try dropping down to size 2s. Cut your wraps into 1" sections and tip of with mack or squid rebait after every 15 20 min as your bait will wash out and be useless

Thanks, how big does the bait need to be, can it be threaded a few cm up the line? I'm after dabs and I don't know what size exactly.

I was in the same boat as you regarding the baits sliding down, what made a big difference for me was switching to a grinner knot for my hooks and leaving a tag end of maybe 3-4 mm. With a grinner knot the tag end points directly back up the snood -so once you push the worm up over the knot and tag end, it won't slide back down

Thanks lad, I went to Duncannon Pier today to target flats, but just a load of coalies. I went before I saw your reply but I just put on a load of wraps, like I squashed it all up the hook (1/0 by the way, 3 hook flapper) and they didn't fall off, will definitely try your method aswell. Disappointed that I didn't catch at least a dab. Tipped one of the hooks with crab but no fish went near it. Thanks for the reply.

Try stitching the worm on and twisting it at the same time, pass the hook through the worm then twist it twice and pass the hook through again and repeat until you have the desired size bait and push some of it over the eye of the hook and then cut off excess....works for me and doesn't fall down and no need for elastic.

Also dont be afraid to go up the line - Im just reading here thinking your not going past the eye - You can put 10 worms on and go up the line 18 inches if you want - if your only using enough worm for the hook then you wont have any luck.


Thats kinda what you want - I made that mistake starting out. Now I know this is more a bassy coddy style but you get the idea

where is the sense in putting 10 lug up a snood for dabs and flounder. The mistake people make is using to much bait take a walk along any comp and look at the baits that are used I guarantee you won't find a bait bigger than 2" you only need the fish to take the hook not the snood

Dabs and flounders can be caught on small baits on small hooks (1s at most) and that gives you the option to use light leads that roll around and cover more ground...

Cocktails are the way to go, with a bit of lug up first, then a bit of mack (little more than skin) and finally a strip of squid, that can be slid up the hook shank. Whip the whole lot in place. A bead or sequins or a bait stop is a good option if you don't like grinner knots and gives an anchor point for your elastic too...

One last point - dabs love stinky bait, the worse the better, and if you go for really small hooks, like 8s or smaller, then down south, you might even catch a sole...

I never said use 10 - I was saying you could for dramatic effect - Obviously your not going to use 10 My point was go up a bit on the line as it sounded like he wasnt going above the eye - which would be a problem for his original question which was bait slipping down the hook.

But hey im blind so what would I know!

Cut the wrap slightly bigger than the shank of your hook, get a baiting needle or put it on top of your scissors and wrap with some bait elastic, not too much or it will turn into a U shape when you slide it off, thread on just over the eye of the hook, tip off with a small bit of mack..roberts your aunties fishfinger. Done and dusted. Good luck.
