Laytown/Bettystown

Tue Feb 16, 2016 11:40 pm

Am staying by the beach at Laytown/Bettystown this weekend and have been told to that I must go fishing in order to give herself peace and quiet to study-so who am I to argue.

What are the best baits for that stretch of beach and are there any places locally to get bait?

Will be going to the angling show Sunday-is swords angling going to be open Sunday does anyone know?

Thanks in advance

Lug , rag and razor are the best baits. Doesn't usually produce much at this time of year. Probably be a few flounder around. I only start fishing it in mid March as too any blanks before then.

Bring chest waders it's a very shallow beach and might get cut of a few times if fishing the low tide , Mac,razor and lug best baits ,mostly flounder to be had with the very odd sea trout . Best of luck lad

Travel light, and just fish one rod and use a backpack for your gear and hang it on your tripod ,I usually set up at low water mark and move back when it gets to waist height ,waste height for safety as some of the gullys which will fill behind ye can be deceptively deep on the way back, you will probably be moving every 25mins or so ,razor and lug will work fine also I've used mussel which can be good on its day, don't know about Mac,there can be millions of pin whiting at times which would be all over the mackeral in a flash

Eoghan what size hooks are you using there. I'm fishing there years and have only got 1 whiting. Ive had bass ,trout ,flounder and eels.

I usually don't fish with too big of hooks as there is plenty of small flounder on that beach, but they hooks would be big enough for anything on that beach, but to be honest I haven't fished laytown in a good while, too many blanks so I reduced the hook size thinking I was getting bites from small flounder but they were whiting ,anyone fishing the beach lately and are they catching anything?

All will be revealed Monday lads when I try it. Was down on the beach briefly this evening for a walk only 90 minutes off high tide and it was gone out miles- it must be incredibly shallow.

Flat calm too I hope that there's a bit of surf come Monday.

Have spotted a likely spot on the beach between laytown and bettystown (closer to bettystown) where a little stream enters the sea-that's where I'll try.

very little weed up on the shore which is good news. And everywhere you walk is carpeted in razor shells so I know my no.1 bait to try. I am going to try clipped no 2 flappers at distance and 1 up one down size 4 close in.

That's the plan anyway !

A couple of slices of mackerel, size 1 hooks

Just a word of warning ,don't park anywhere quiet and out of the way ,the area is notorious for break-ins,you may have to walk a bit with your gear but it will be worth it for peace of mind
Best of luck with the fishing

Beautiful day here . . . For a walk !

Fishing the ebbing tide here the last two hours not a touch. Not surprising given the conditions- Bright sunshine and a flat calm sea.

Will be out for a short session later on the flood in darkness hopefully it will improve.

The info above about only fishing one rod was sound. I'm fishing two rods and it's pure torture you haven't one rod cast before the sea has retreated what looks like half a mile and the other bait you cast 15 minutes ago is in only an inch of water !

I must admit that I didn't- I was out for dinner and the combination of being stuffed and the fire in the cottage being too nice ensured I stayed in
