Hi Joe

Hope you like walking!

Strandhill is a good spot but it depends on what you are after. Directly in front of the town and to the right, there is an extremely powerful rip current - careful observation will show you the undercurrent running out under the waves. Its one of the reasons why the surfers will monopolise the area however when it gets dark there has been sporadic reports of bass and small flats on the beach. To the extreme left there is the ground in front of the airport - shallow with lots of rough ground that also holds bass and sea trout. I've never gone out there but the channel is sandy and has a serious current on it in bigger tides - apparently. Not a place to wade, I was told. I fished off the rocks twice and had one big hit that I missed which I presume was a bass. People have said that there are rays on the beach if you have the distance...

The other place that is definitely worth a look is all the way down to the far end of the dunes, into the mouth of Ballysadare Bay. A huge set of dunes guards the entrance and inside it the channel cuts in sharply on the Strandhill side. This has a large population of sea trout but has plenty of flounder as well. This has the benefit of road access off the R292, turning left as you head out from Strandhill and doubling back behind the golf club. Very isolated. You don't have to cast far but it can be very weedy. Crab is the ideal bait here. Over the years, people have reported lots of smaller sea trout to lures and flies as well. Never had the patience myself for it... tended to fish with 3 hook flappers and small hooks. All the usual suspects but surprisingly nothing very big. You can fish almost off the road at Culeenamore (spelling?) but its better to walk around the "hook" to the far corner and fish back in... small tides better for flood/ebb size, as it really rips through into such a vast bay.

Hope this helps = just be really careful of the rip current. I only fished in front of the town once, in darkness, in knee high water and the speed at which the sand came off from under your feet was just unbelievable. Maybe an hour or two around high water off the rocks is the safest option...

Hope this helps... btw, Rosses Point, the beach or the channel at the yacht club, is a nice spot, sheltered and produces a fair run of fish, nothing big but quite a few species. There is also - at the right time of year, not now - lots of tope in the area and a certain world class angler has had lots off the shore, somewhere around Coney Island. Seen the pictures. 7 in one day. Unreal.

And if you can find from locals the spot where they dig the king rag down in Sligo town - somewhere out beyond the old quay - well, a PM would be very welcome!

Cheers

I have only fished culleenamore in strandhill for sea trout so can't really comment but further north there are loads of good shore marks. If you are looking for surf fishing then Streedagh near Grange, Tullan strand in Bundoran and Rossnowlagh beach all fish well. All except Tullan you can practically park on the beach. Lug, maddies, mackerel strips or squid works well for bait.

thanks lads! just looking for afew flats of the beaches, is the pier at rosses point any good for smaller species? or typical pier species such as coilies, whiting, rockling, dogs? i went to strand hill a couple of times for a look but didnt bring my gear. it looks like a promising surf beach for nighttime :D
