I know of some guys in South Wales who played around with this two years ago . To bulk it out they were adding mussels , dead worms and all sorts of shell fish they could get their hands on . The general consensus at the time was that the initial costs , the time involved and the hassle involved it wasn't worth it but knowing them they have found an easier way of doing it and the results they had when they started were good , but two years ago we had a good run of cod over there so it would of been a better trial if the cod fishing had been poor .
It's an idea adapted from the carp boys and something if it could be played around with could be an option for many species , strangely it was something I was chatting to another angler last night about for targeting flatties .
I have always thought there is a massive amount sea anglers can learn from the course angling side of the sport, the time and detail especially the carp boys put into their rigs is impressive and I adapt a lot of them for sea fishing . If you see everybody laughing at someone hair rigging a pealer crab for cod very soon it will be me .

Great stuff Morgan - think you're 100% right with regards to the effort. Always interested in new baits.

Seems like a really good idea espically when you cant get hold of crab baits mussles are about nearly where and same with macs im sure we all have a few in freezer from summer worth a try i suppose and razors and other shell fish are cheap enough by the kg i fish monger

Yes , ive tried it a few times using fox arma mesh - stuffed it with any old peeler ,worms,mussells etc left over from a days fishing , fished it on my second rod and it didnt produce as many cod as regular fresh peeler, but im still tinkering around with the idea , I think it would be better to make them up and freeze them in batches and maybe add a little breadcrumb or bran to soak up the juices and it would keep a good scent trail as they defrost in the water

make your own cart bait from all the bait left overs then put the mix into swimfeeders and freeze them bring them in your coolbox take out one at a time.clip on your rig job done.

all great ideas , I have made a few calls back home to see if the guys carried on with the baits , if I find anything out I will post it ,

I cant remember if it was a matt hayes or a john Wilson fishing show about fishing the fjords in Norway I was watching but the left over bait was made into sausages by the skipper and cut into hook size baits,
I often thought of making some but id have to have an epi pen handy for my wife if I was using the kitchen to make them.
I like the idea of making them cutting them into much smaller sections and hair rigging them for cod.
Another idea I had was saving the juices by throwing a few slices of bread into the bait box towards the end of a session then freezing the bread before crumbing it to use as ground bait for mullet or to add to the sausage bait to bulk them up.

I always shake a few halibut or trout pellets in with lug worm or rag if dug the day before, im not sure if that one works yet but god loves a tryer

I have used cart bait for cod and turbot and it works pretty well but to bulk it out I keep all my left over baits and use bread crumbs or just bread roll it in cling film and keep it in freezer the winter cod seem to take it before fresh lug every time.

I have used after getting some from a group of anglers who were having a club competition in cobh last year they were the only anglers who were catching and when they were finished they gave me a couple of sticks of cart which I had never seen or heard of before.I have tried to get it here but Irish Angling outlets do not stock or even heard of it
.I get it from the UK in 1kilo blocks which you can divide into smaller pack to suit your own needs

they had none in stock when I tried and they never heard of it but that was last year maybe they have got some in now I will try them again when I need it thanks
