I found a tag washed up on a beach today. I think it was on a fish as its not really a beach you would tag on and its broken at the join. what should I do with it or where do i send it or will I just bin it?

It's not much use to anyone unless it's attached to a fish. Was it a yellow or red roto tag?

yellow - I thought the beach it washed up on may be of interest is all (i know it could have come from china but still) - it seems old.

Was the number clearly visible on it, and did it say central fisheries board Ireland on one side?

Just fishiries board, but the serial num begins with ie - the number is 1555 - which I thought was fairly low = old

1555 would be a very old tag. As Jim said, email Shane O'Reilly at fisheries Ireland.

So Shane got back to me with the results.
The Tag was deployed on a Blue Shark in Tralee bay as far back as 1975.
40yrs ago - I find that great

I wonder how long the shark lived and so on - Really interesting

Delighted I mailed now!

Mad - how did it end up there - never heard of a blue shark getting caught on the east coast - just shows they must venture up the coast.

I would be pretty sure the tag came off after the fish has passed on (rip) or else it grew out as it was still intact. Then went on a spin around the sea and ended up in wexford. It was very high up the beach beside a river that has dried before entering the sea so was probably washed up the river and as the river dried ended up on the sand.
Or someone could have picked it off the shore and dropped it
