Going Fishing Cork.

Please help, Myself and my buddy are going fishing this week in Cork come rain, hail or sun shine, a couple of questions if I may but firstly a bit of back ground information:-

We can catch trout, mackerel and cold's.
Have the beach casters.
Want to catch a bass, cod or flat fish.

Questions,
Where should we go, what bait should we use, at high tide or low tide, what methods should we use, basically lads we don't want to blank and get disheartened so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Anybody give lessons or willing to let two novices tag along & learn. Was on to Bob Moss about getting lessons (I bought his two books and DVD) but he doesn't do lessons anymore since his insurance ran out.

Ur answer for the cod...not sure about bass and mullet

how are ya doing colum. not sure where in cork you are fishing but the red strand past clonakilty is fishing well at the moment for all of the mentioned species. also garetstown near kinsale is supposed to be throwing up a few fish at the moment.

Hiya,

Fish from 90 mins before to 90 mins after LW at Monkstown for cod. Black lug and squid/mackerel your best bet on 2 hook pat rigs or similar use size 1 hooks or 1/0s for best results.

Fish Garretstown on a rising tide, preferably at night for bass, dogs and the odd flounder. Black lug or Razor preferred for bass, dogs and flounder fall mainly to mackerel, the odd whiting (Vsmall) can pop up here too.

I plan on heading out at the weekend myself, not sure where/when yet but ill let you know and if you want to tag along, your very welcome.

If you dont want to blank, the wallis probably your best bet but be warned, for best results you need to be able to cast 100 yards or so.

should do ok if this sw wind backs off a bit. thats been the main problem lately. too calm. should be a few bass going so best of luck.fishing my self further west this weekend so my let ya know how i get on.

Whats your first choice of bait for bass Lumpy?

on the beaches were fishing at the moment its big lug baits tipped with white rag on 2/0 penell pulleys. as the year progresses its crab in the spring and early summer off the rocks around clonakilty then they seem to get a preference for sandeel if thats any help. also have had a few of them over christmas on yellow tail nad frozen black lug cocktails

Cheers Lumpy, was contemplating a bass bash tomorrow at Inch and was interested to hear what tactics you employed. I havent had a bass in months, (too busy with cod!) I would usually have opted for lug/razor (not to any great degree of success right enough :D ) Thanks.

no problems. weve tried razor fish alot over the winter but have had no luck with it. think you need to fish beaches they inhabit. dont think the beaches we fish have them. if you are fishing inch it may be worth trying a 2 hook flapper, just to increase ure chances of flounder

Got a soft spot for Razor as I caught my first Bass on it at Garretstown. I usually fish 2 rods on the beach, bait one with a 2 or 3 hook flapper and the other with a clip down Pennell for bass, will see how that goes, fingers crossed.... :D

thats funny because thats the one bait we havnt tried from Garretstown. when did ya get him there. fished it in october but was full of dogs.

It was the day the close season finished in June, caught just before dusk opposite the blue flag on the large main beach in a lovely surf. I am informed the smaller beach, the one plagued with surfers is a better bet for bass though, being as there are large sections of rough ground mixed through it. Have you got an opinion or info on that? Havent actually had chance to fish it since I was told that though...

ya thats what ive heard too but havnt fished it yet. tend to fish off the rock outcrop to the left of this beach. found that you have a greater amount of ground to cover if we fish 4 rods betweem us from here. did see a load of bass shoaling sprats off that beach last autumn but alas i didnt have me rod. typicle!!!!
have heard of ray being caught off the beach and rocks there. think they were only small but theres always hope!!

Well guess what, we blanked. On my buddy's advice we went to Coolmain by Kilbrittain, guy in the tackle shop said it was fishing well at the moment, we had sand eel, razor & black lug. I even tried plugging, nothing. But it wag brilliant to get out anyway. We fished the incoming tide on Saturday from 12.45 to 4.00. How did ye get on lads?.

Well nice to know we werent the only ones! See shore angling reports for report on Red Strand, Clon. Sure it beats work, thats the only thing I can say about it and in fairness, it is February.... :(

same here fished a ffew hours sat night only got small coalies. the place is infested with them.

Lads where on Coolmain did you fish? From the beach, the kinsale side wall or the pink elephant rocks?

On the small beach although I did suggest to my friend that we try the opposite side of the bay by the Pink Elephant. Please don't tell me you cleaned up on the opposite side. I know there was six flounder caught in the estuary by a guy using peeler crab.

Man any time I clean up I shout it from the rooftops!
Yeah peeler gives you a big advantage inside Courtmac at this time of year but lug usually does well over at Coolmain. Try and get out there again before the green weed kills it for the summer
