I've recently bought an 11'6 ft 2-4oz rod for estuary and light beach fishing for bass. I'm a bit strapped for cash after it and have a fishing trip a the end of the month. So I need a rod stand and have seen some videos of people making them from PVC pipe, has anyone tried this with 11ft + rods and does it work?..thanks lads and ladies.

Any links to the videos, I'm interested in the idea and have PVC pipe in the garage somewhere...

I'll try attach one now. It's pretty simple, just bury a 4ft length of 2inch PVC into the sand good and deep and stuck the butt of yore rod into it. The videos seem to be all of Americans using smaller spinning rods tho. Wonder would it hold up against a strong tide and a 4oz lead?
These work well, as you can really dig the spike in well into the sand to anchor the holder. However, the conditions there are normally more clement than here! The tough thing with a length of pipe might be being able to "drive" it into the sand deep enough in order to give a secure anchor.

Thanks for that shortcircuit. Yeah that's what I was thinking. I've made one the other day and drilled holes in it to use a metal bar as a foot rest to push the pipe into the sand like a spade. I'll post some pictures later

A few pics of the PVC rod holder I knocked up. Any opinions? I'd try it out at a beach but I live in Kilkenny and beaches are pretty rare.

Thanks lads. Hope it's strong enough. Want to cut a section out of the top so the reel can slide down further. Going to add some foam padding around the edges too so it won't scratch the rod.

generally when using light bass rods I would hold the rod no real need for rodrest when fishing that light.you will catch more fish holding the rod using your fingers as a bite indicator.

Thanks for that Greg, makes sense and it's not a heavy set up. I've never been beach fishing before so plenty to learn. I'll still bring it tho, somewhere to keep my rod and reel out of the sand if nothing else.

Yes, hold the rod as much as possible, but you still need the rod rest for retackling, rebaiting etc. And even a sainted bass angler will have to go for a pee now and then...

Good stuff, thanks again. Looks like I made the right decision not to buy an expensive rod rest so. Out of interest, does anyone have any pics of home made rod stands that work well?

You may well regret the decision not to buy an expensive rod rest when the tide starts to run or the wind picks up. Pvc pipe never caught on for a reason

sharpen the end a wee bit to help it go down? nice touch with the holes and agree about a slot / padding but that may damage the integrity of the PVC pipe and weaken it. Does the iron pole you put into the holes to allow you foot in the pipe double as one of the legs?
how did you attach the "legs" to the PVC?

Yeah I've the end of the pipe cut to a 45 degree angle and sharpened. No, the bar for pushing it into the ground is only maybe a foot long. The legs are threaded rods maybe 3ft long. I put a pipe bracket on the pipe an drilled holes into it at an angle for the threaded rods/legs to go into. Hopefully when legs and pipe are pushed into the sand they should be solid.. I'm guna put the whole lot into one of the bags you get with camping chairs for transport

You can make a home made bazooka style carrier for it from a bigger diameter pipe...
