Request for information on Sea Bass

Sun Mar 01, 2015 12:16 am

Hi folks im looking to get some info,

here is a generic email i have sent to many organisations and individuals explaining what im looking for and why.

A chara,

I write this email to you today requesting some help.

My name is Chris Keane, I am an avid shore angler and a member of the South Shore SAC, Dublin. I am also a member of Sinn Féin. I am very concious of the responsibilities, we as anglers have to protect fisheries and in turn our sport.

As you may be aware the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis (National Conference) 2015, is taking place this coming Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th of March. This Ard Fheis gives the opportunity to all members of Sinn Féin to create party policy. I have taken this opportunity to attempt to further protect Irish Sea Bass from commercial fishing. I have put the following motion to the Ard Fheis:

"This Ard Fheis supports the ban on commercial fishing of sea bass in Irish waters and will oppose any attempt to overturn current legislation."

I am hopeful that this motion will pass, however I feel there may be some opposition which will require me to "state my case" as it were.

This is where I'm hoping you can help. I am aware that there is commercial fishermen within the membership of Sinn Féin and they will oppose me by arguing why the ban should be lifted. Any information you could offer, to better strengthen my case would be greatly appreciated, from facts about about breeding, age of sexual maturity , life span of sea bass to the most up to date economic figures you may have regarding angling tourism and its value to the national and local economies. all information will be greatly appreciated. I should state that should my proposal be successful it would ensure Sinn Féin policy will support the existing commercial fishing ban on sea bass and in turn conservation of sea bass stocks within Irish waters.

I apologise for the short notice but reiterate the importance any information you may be in a position to pass on to me.

Thanks in advance.

Is mise le meas,

Chris Keane.

I have also put a motion forward calling for the Ard fheis to oppose any attempt to introduce a 'rod licence' or similar taxation on recreational sea anglers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated feelfree to email me at krustykeane@hotmail.com
Thanks.

Plenty of information on"bass" available to the public across the web pages these days just allocate an hour or two to searching out the facts. Also plenty of studies done very recently of the value of bass to the greater economy and state copper funds in comparison to what a short lived "legal" commercial venture would amount to.

Nice pun

In all seriousness though, personal political affiliation shouldn't come into this. OP is trying to protect angler's rights in a party that would have a sizeable commercial fishing lobby.

Sinn Fein are very strong in Donegal, which is home to an enormous (in terms of tons of fish landed) commercial fleet, so anything we can do to protect our angling resource should be done-regardless of political party.

Best of luck

Would be more concerned about the southern half of the country's coastal areas where the majority of the bass population is resident and would be directly affected should the commercial ban be lifted.

Just took about ten minutes on the Internet to find most of the information Krusty was looking for and there's far more on there than I have time to look through . Defiantly a party political broadcast post . If the monster raving loonie party are still going can't wait for their post .
It's sad that politics are now heavily influencing fishing as most of the issues just need a sprinkling of common sense not a debate by a load of people who have no idea about fishing , the fisheries minister in the UK was asked on camera to name 5 common sea fish from pictures show to him , he got two right and was laughing about it . Do you think there is any chance the people deciding on the future of angling have any idea about what they are talking about or ever give a s*** about it .
