Woody,
You say it was OK and then it went wrong on you, these are things in my opinion that badly effect braid...the rod, if its to floppy and does not recover from the cast quick enough it can cause to much line violence, results = wind knots .... also if the wind is to great or in the wrong direction = wind knots, are these the kind of problems you've been having.
Braid is fine if used properly and at the right times. I would say its better than mono for the following types of fishing....Spinning =100% better than mono......Bait fishing at speed either close in or far out, especially if your standing rod in hand, you can feel a fish fart......Deep sea from a boat, the more pull on the tide the better its worth.
I wont use it from the shore with a multiplier reel, if you do nest....nightmare!! even with a fixed spool your casting (if for distance) needs to be very smooth, not as unforgiven as mono.
Colour to me is not that important, even if your bait fishing, the braid main line is far enough away from the hooks not to spook a fish, if bright colours ever do spook fish. personally I think other things spook fish long before line....can you imagine what fish must see down there under the waves
I find its just
NOT as user friendly as mono..IMHO
Good job there is not a short time limit on the edit.....I re'read and forgot the "not" phewwwwwww
