Bait sliding down hook and covering point

Hi,

Im starting to have an issue with bait sliding down the hook and covering the business end, Im using Aberdeen's and plenty of bait elastic with. In particular crab and squid ect are the main causes. Iv even taken to using extra elastic at the bottom to try and bind the bait to the hook.

I never seemed to have a problem in the past but it becoming more an issue as im using slightly larger baits.

Any help on how to stop this would be great. I missed something large last night by the bite I got and this was the reason.

try using a pennel setup for larger baits the second hook should stop your bait from sliding

Try a wider gape hook, an Aberdeen is very narrow for big baits there are several good ones tsunami do one called the mako, cheap sharp and strong,Cox and rall are good they do an upside extra that's excellent too, a pennel hook is a must for big baits, your rig hits the water at high speed and the bigger the bait the more pressure on it when it enters the water, a small hook is all you need to keep everything in place make sure the pennel hook gets hooked into plenty of the elastic on your bait to help keep it in place

As the lads have said the right hook and bait elastic used efficiently will help with the problem. On a side note, I use pennel traces regularly but I never attach the pennel hook into the bait, I just give it a couple of twists around the line and sit it beside the bait, I find with a powerful cast the pennel hook can pull the bait apart if attached directly to the bait.

Cheers lads. Il take a look at some hooks. I use pennels some times when using very big bates like whole mackerel/squid/multiple carb. The baits I have been using recently have been about 2inches long with 2/0 hooks. Would the pennel not be to much for that size baits. Il start using the pennel with maybe a size 4 or 6 to secure the bait would a 2/0 or 3/0 be too small in conjunction.

Martin, one thing you could try is to tie the hook onto the snood using a grinner knot, but leave quite a large tag end.once you push the bait up past the knot it acts as a sort of barb.

This trick works quite well with worm baits, not so sure about squid or crab

as shortcircuit said grinner knot with a long tag , also have you tried using wool instead of bait elastic it soak in the juices or use it with bait elastic. I find bait holders a handy hook to use some people don't like them but I've yet to have an issue with them for large fish, i started using circle hooks for smaller fish that's where the large tag from a grinned knot comes in handy for me anyway . tight lines man

Listened to a podcast recently with ex England match angler Mick McCallum and he mentioned he uses elastic bands.
stick the hook through the band and cut off the excess leaving a small piece holding the bait away from the hook.
He preferred red elastics.

for big baits a bait shield is a fairly good addition,i find it takes the brunt off of the impact when the rig hits the water,penneling hooks is a must for me when using larger baits,i like to use plastic tubing or electrical cable on my top hook shank to set the distance between hooks,the grinner with a long tag is also something i find myself doing all the time with all baits as i like to leave the bend of the hook out of my bait,showing the gape and throat of the hook...penneled rigs still aint invincible,you can still loose the odd fish...
