East Coast Shore Tope - Success rate?

Sun Nov 23, 2014 2:33 am

Decided this year I wanted to catch my first east coast shore tope. I've done 10 sessions total between July and November (my last session of this year was tonight) and i've only had one run!! I was just wondering what the hit rate was like for other anglers who have caught a few of them from the shore?

I fished in the right conditions, venues, rigs, baits, tides etc etc as had alot of help from guys who had caught shore tope previously but still no luck. The 10 sessions amounts to about 45 hours of tope fishing and I know a guy who has caught alot of them in North Clare and he reckons he put in about 50 hours for each tope he had. Madness but when I had that run on the first night targeting them in July I was hooked!!

The 10 sessions were broken down into 4 in kilcoole and 6 on greystones south...Fingers crossed for next year!!!

i dont target them much but was fishing courtown pier last night and was catching lots of whiting and small flats i was fishing 2 rods and got a small knock on 1 and struck into the fish and had it on but new it was only small as i was reeling in the other rod got a good bite so i put the first rod down to grab the second rod as i had the other rod in my hand the the first rod doubled over and start heading for the sea picked it up and and seen a big splash on the surface and the line start heading out to sea it took about 80/100 yards of line so i locked it up and tryed to gain some line back only got a few turns of the reel and then snap dont know if it was a tope as it broke the surface but dont know what else it could have being maybe a seal after taking the small fish that was hooked

Ste C - Greystones south was perfect last nite, no weed, water like a mirror and heaps of coalies... and not one run! The only run I had was in kilcoole in July on my first night after them. I heard November is late for them and by December they are usually gone if that is right?
