Potential mark (Youghal)

Fri Oct 17, 2014 10:50 am

I went on a little bit of reconnaissance trip last weekend and stumbled on a potentially nice potential mark in Pilmore east Cork, just at the mouth of the estuary. I reviewed the area and it has quite a large sandy expanse, lots of lug worm evident and the water didn't appear too deep.

Has anyone had any luck in that general location?...maybe it is better for species other than Bass?

be prepared to be drag weed off your line by the bucket load. id advise going to ballymacoda and walking back to pilmore on the other side of the estuary and fish from low water up for flounder and spin for bass

Very shallow beach but it has been known to throw up a few bass over high water.
The estuary, Womanagh river, is a cracking spot for flounder and the odd bass. Like all tidal waters it's best fished on the slacker tides. Get a weed report first it can be very bad there after a big blow

Also if any heavy rain the estuary goes into flood very quickly and the area takes a few days to get rid of any fresh.Regarding the codling yes they do turn up generally after a decent onshore wind but never any real size,so best to stick to the youghal marks if after bigger and more numerous codling.
Also be wary of the incoming tide if fishing on the front beach as some of the gulleys back along the beach can fill quickly and become quite deep.
