Species?

Im about 99% but just to be certain is this a pollock?

They are pollack all right. The easiest way to differentiate between a pollack and a coalfish is that the lateral line running along the side of a pollack curves as seen in the pics, whereas the lateral line in a coalfish is straight.

Thanks Gerty too small for the pot though :(

I was fishing deep water off some rocks using lures, I was casting as far as I could. This guy was literally caught 10 feet away from me. They have ferocious power when they strike . I wouldn't mind catching a large one.

You will catch most pollock in deep water marks just a few meters from the shore.

They dive for the kelp as soon as they take the lure, so do coalfish...but I reckon the coalfish is a stronger fight. Pollock seen to give up to easy whereas a coalfish keeps diving
