My brother-in-law got this on South beach yesterday. I believe it is a Weever fish and can deliver a very nasty sting from its dorsal fin which is laced with venom. Anyone ever had any experiences with one?

Yup.. Lesser weaver. Very sore if you get spiked.. their poison is protien based, so if you get spiked the best trick is to apply as much heat as you can stand, it causes the poison to coagulate, just like egg white on a pan.
Happened to me once on a boat, little bastage was hidden by weed and got me straight into the thumb, the skipper picked that moment to walk oit of the cabin with a steaming hot mug of coffee... he wasnt amused when i plunged my thumb into it about 2 inches from his mouth lol... worked though.. the instant throbbing excrutiating pain was gone in 20 mins or so..

Seen my brother in law 30 years old crying his eyes out in pain after standing on one.
Boiling kettles in a basin for about 3 hours !!!!
Some sting off them

As well as the dorsal fin the gill plates have a spike as well.

Had a few of these over the years . I always keep a close eye on the trace when landing a fish as i nearly grabbed hold of one beach fishing one night after about 30 whitening in a row i was on autopilot .
