newbie

hi all new to the site have no experience of bass fishing

was looking at some rods and reels and not sure what exactly i need

i havent a clue what 2000 3000 4000 6000 means any help

would this rod and reel do the job or can you advice me also what other little bits of equipment would you recommend

Hi richie, I'm assuming it's lure fishing rather than bait fishing you're interested in, based on the links you put up there?
Im a relative newcomer to fishing myself, but I'm a little further down the line than you are, so I'll do my best to answer your questions . . .

Firstly, the 2000,4000 etc are sizes of reel. A 4000 holds more line than a 2000, but will be physically larger and will weigh more.
Maddeningly, reel sizes are not standard, but vary from manufacturer to manufacturer i.e. a Daiwa 2500 reel is the same size approximately as a Shimano 3000 reel (I think!)! For lure fishing you do not need a large line capacity (as you won't be casting that far) so anything from 1500 to 4000 will do. When you are looking at a reels specs you will see exactly how much line it will take. I myself have a 4000 reel , which some people might think a bit big for lure fishing, but its a lovely reel and it is grand and light and goes well with my particular rod. Personal preference is a lot of it.

Rod: That rod looks OK, but I had a Rovex rod and it was poker-stiff and more suited to boat fishing (jigging) than casting the quite light lures and soft plastics used for bass fishing. The rovex rod I had (not the exact same model, but it was weighted 20-40g) was quite poor at casting, I found.

Browsing through the forum, you will see the same names pop up time and again for good budget spinning rods: Surecatch Salty, Shimano Vengeance, there are plenty more if you have a browse. I myself have an Abu Devil 10-30g which has served me well and costs around €25! I have landed decent fish with it, and there are a good few other people on the forum who have one and are happy with it.

As I say, I am a relative novice at this game, this forum is full of very experienced people who I'm sure will give you better/more relvant advice than me!

Consider the shimano catana in size 3000 or 4000. The shimano reels are great quality and you'll get a spare spool. The only maintenance I do is rise it in fresh water after every salt water session, which greatly improves the longevity.

Abu vendetta 9' 15/40 gr & a shimano exage 4000. You can't go wrong with this combo.

Just a few points on the other bits and pieces you're going to need:

Line- the choice here is between mono and braid. Most lure anglers would use braid as it is a lot thinner than mono of the same strength and has zero stretch, meaning extremely good sensitivity. I suppose braid of .15 to .2mm diameter would be appropriate for shore fishing.
It's abrasion resistance is poor though, so a lot of people would tie on a 1-2 foot leader of either mono or flourocarbon.

Lures!- you could go on forever! the lure forum here has plenty of information. Also there are loads of blogs out there that do an extremely good job of marketing the latest and greatest!
Suffice to say there are three main categories: hard plastic lures, metal lures and soft lures. Hard plastic lures are designed to be cast out and retrieved and usually they will have an in built action that looks good to a bass. These lures can be really expensive, up to €27 for one lure! However they are proven and some lures have an almost "cult" status, like the TackleHouse Feed Shallow

Metal lures are "old school" lures that a lot of people still have a lot of success with. The classic Kilty lure, Abu Toby are examples of these. I must hold up my hand and admit I haven't used these much.

Soft plastic lures are lures designed to look like small fish, or worms. These require more input from the angler than the hard plastic lures, which is actually great, because you can fish them in any number of ways e.g. bump along the bottom, "sink and draw", dead drift over reefs, ad infinitum. Another bonus is that a lot of them can be rigged "weedless" which means you can fish them with the hook point hidden. This means way less snags, and you can fish them through really rough weedy snaggy ground that you wouldn't dare do with a hard plastic lure!

You will also need a pliers for taking out hooks and a small scissors or nail clippers for snipping line.
