Some more silly questions. (mag 525)

Wed Jan 18, 2006 6:50 pm

Ive received a 525 mag off ebay, brand new but no box and instructions. 1. Under the handle there is a star shaped thing, what is it for. 2.under the star thing there is a silver knob, again, what is that for. 3. then the switch with free spool, retreive. 4.The opposite side of the reel, a silver buttom. 5.Slow fast switch/lever. What are they for and how do I set them, especially for a new user of multipliers. thanks

and does the reel lay under the rod like a fixed spool.

keep it set to slow till you get onto it, then you can start fiddling about with it
the star thing is for the drag setting, if you hook a big fish, slacken if off a bit so it can take a bit of line if it needs to
the silver knob beside it is for setting how much the spool can move side to side (the more it can move, the more speed and harder to control generally) so keep it screwed fairly tight though not completely tight to start.
the silver button on the mag control end plate is for your ratchet clicker, this is used as a bite indicator if fishing for say conger or something big that will lift your bait and run(with drag backed off a good bit)
dunno if i missed anything....!

the reel should be fitted to the same side of the rod as the greys mercury sticker is on

thats great, the only other question was the reel position, is it only boat fishing where they use the reel on top of the rod.

Wed Jan 18, 2006 7:02 pm

no, same for all multipliers, whether shore or boat.

Thank goodnes, I thought I had bought a left hander.

David,

They say the only silly question is the one you didnt ask

But that last one "what side of the rod does the multipier go" is killing me    if your taking the piss it'll be killing you too

Good Luck.

I was meaning do you have the reel above or below, when you use a fixed spool it is below. and does a multiplier wynd the opposite way to a fixed spool.

Wed Jan 18, 2006 7:52 pm

Most multipliers are wound with the right hand, Abu make a small selection of left hand wind reels as do a few other manufacturers.

The reel sits on top of the rod ( same as boat fishing ), and as you wind in you need to guide the line onto the spool to keep it level.

Does the 525mag only come in right handed.

Wed Jan 18, 2006 7:58 pm

As far as I know, yes - right handed only.

What was confusing me was the wynding and positioning of a multiplier, I read on another fishing site someone finding it strange changing from fixed spool to multi, but everyone says you get use to it very quickly.

Most people do get used to it very quickly.

if you look in th eClubs/meets section of this site you will see a casting event being set up in the next couple of months. Why not go to it, meet some of the guys from the forum and learn from some of the good casters who will be there to help and advise.

David,

The butt under your armpit and outstretch your arm up the rod, then mark where you thumb sits is the right way.

And for a learner who is just starting to use a multipier, IMO reel down is a big NO!!, it fetches many other things into the cast. leave that for a few months mate.

I only put tape above the reel seat, leave the rod under the reel seat bare, that makes it thiner ans lets you get a better grip on the spool with your thumb.
