Not looking for any marks or anything like that, just purely out of curiosity, is it possible to catch sole with any regularity in Ireland?

I have a memory of when I was a kid and someone landed a good few at Cahore Pier that they'd caught in a small trawl up around Roney, but I can't remember whether it was real or if I imagined it.

Ballyquinn beach in Brandon throws up the odd one I believe...or so Bob Moss's book says!

I have fished Ballyquinn a lot in the past with bait and we never saw a sole. In fact its never really good with bait at all.
When we first arrived down there over 15 years ago we used to fish as much with bait as we did with lures. Too many times four or more of us lined the strand with the best of bait and blanked. My bro in law has a flatfish fettish and targeted flats with the correct gear too. I have caught some dustbin flounders off it with a free lined sandeel meant for bass.

Years ago, I saw two continentals catch a few in Ferrycarrig of all places. They had come over for the coarse fishing and were either on the way to or from the ferry. Small hooks of course.

we fished a comp at ballyquin last saturday the fishing was unreal. whiting up to 36cm, codling, few flounder, dogfish. the far end of the beach fished much better. i read the same thing in Bob Moss's book about sole in ballyquin but i have never seen one, i have heard rumours of sole been caught at other spots in kerry, but i have tried these marks but never succeeded in getting a sole.

I asked the question because I often see features in the English angling press about venues in the UK that regularly produce sole. It would appear that we don't have any venues like this ourselves. :(

I used to get a couple of Plaice every summer from the boat in Cahore when I was a kid, but I haven't had a single one in almost 20 years since. I think Irish Sea Plaice are all but gone.

rob, as unbelievable as it may seem, I landed one a year and half ago or so at the start of the beach around the corner from the pier one night. No pics to prove it but i did have to ask a few of the guys to be sure, as it def had the orange spots.... a couple disagreed but for sure it wasn't a flounder, and after looking a pictures of Plaice i am positive. Not a specimen or anything near that size, but a small to medium adult prob?
