Tanking Lugworm

Hi all,

With the tides being rubbish this week for a nine to fiver like myself I’m going to have to try keep my lug for an extra few days than I would ideally want to.

A few people have told me tanking is the way to go – can anyone who successfully does it advise me on the best method (I’ve googled it and the answers are a bit rubbish)? Lumpy told me how best to do it at the pairs, but there was an awful amount of liquor taken at the time – many thanks in advance!

I use a large plastic container and put the lug in there with just enough water to cover them and change the water every day for the first 4 or 5 days then every 2 or 3 days after that. I have managed to keep lug for 3 weeks this way. They can be a bit soft at the end of 3 weeks as they have passed all the sand throguh their bodies, but they are perfect.

I'm interested in hearing about the tanking myself.

I grade the worms first into two or three different sizes ensuring they are spotless.

Then place into cat litter trays leaving them loads of room and fill the tray with fresh seawater until the worms are covered.

Make sure they remain level in the fridge. Change the water every few days but it helps to have the water you intend using at the same temp as your fridge (in the fridge if you have room) that way reducing temp shocks.

They will be a little soft but if you take them out the night before you intend using them put them into paper they will harden into bullets.

Yep! Trays all the way. Simple and easy to hold lug. I use a similar method for rag and it works superbly I've had them for months.
I have seen some lads use big aerated tanks for rag. Not seen it done with lug though.
There'll surely be something online on the tank setup with aerator but the fridge system works fine.

trays are the way alright me personally will not keep for anymore than 4-5days max i would not use it,i could keep rag or lug alive for weeks but the bait goes to shite when you put it on the hook and its not worth a fidlers in my opinion

Not lugworm I know but there's a tropical fish shop in Brittas (Aquatic village) and the owner is trying an experiment to breed ragworm.
At the moment he's keeping them in aquariums with deep sand beds and feeding them on garden worms.

Pretty insane to see them bursting through the sand to grab the worms.. I'm not sure how long he has been keeping them but they appear to be thriving so far. Well worth a visit to see them in action and to listen to the mad ramblings of the owner (Ian)

cat litter trays and air stone all the way jim. i keep 2 trays in our fridge, 1 for lug and 1 for rag. i just keep an inch of sea water in the trays and change it daily.
this way i can keep them alive for a few weeks at a time.
but the rag keep better for longer than the lug do
