Is it possible to catch crabs in Bray?

Thu Sep 26, 2013 5:20 pm

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and I was wondering if some experts can help me. I would like to bring my little one to Bray for some crab fishing, but I'm not very good at any kind of fishing. I was therefore wondering if it's easy enough to catch some crabs in Bray, and what equipment (if any) should be used.

I saw an angler on the pier, the other day, who got a brown crab by chance, but I'm not sure I would bring my girl on such a high place (also because we would have to lift the crabs all the way up). If there is a more comfortable place, we would be delighted to know.

By the way, as a side question: should we be successful in our "quest", are the crabs found in Bray good enough to eat? My child likes to catch them, but I don't dislike them in the pot either (as long as they are not "polluted", nor endangered).

Thanks in advance for the answers.

I don't know about bray but I'm pretty sure you can catch crabs anywhere, just get some bacon or fish or any meat put it in a little net sack ting with a few stones a bit of rope and your set, you can add tinfoil or anything bright as well, good luck and you should definitely get a few crabs:) have fun

Bray harbour has a hugh amount of crabs, fish for them down the side of harbour wall as said a bit of weighted onion sack with a piece of fish, meat or rasher will do

Thanks for all the replies!

@JOHN1, sorry if I'm asking a stupid question, but do you mean lowering the bag in the area of the harbour where the boats are anchored? Water looks a bit murky there, I'm not sure I would dare to taste something from that place.

Regarding the potato bag, I think I have one. I'm just wondering, how do crabs enter it? If I put it in the water, it will lay flat. Do I have to use any special "trick"? :)

Thanks again for the replies.

What I used to do was just get some fishing line and physically tie some bacon on the end and then make a loop a bit further up the line and get a stone and secure it on...then just lower it down. The place we used to go, you could see the bottom and crabs would come from everywhere..once a crab starts eating it, lift it out. The crab won't let go!...

Your all gas, but if you read the post he mentions it's to bring his daughter down to catch them and many would deem smart comments to be offensive. I thought at this stage we would be all over the cheap crab gags. Grow up.

I'm clearly missing something, I can't really understand what the jokes are about. Did I write something wrong?

Hi - used to do a load of crab fishing when I was a kid, nothing to it and very easy. As mackfish says above, all you need is a line, just tie a bit of rasher to it and a small weight and just let it go down the side - crabs are everywhere so you won;t be waiting too long. Pull it up slowly - the crabs will keep eating away. The suggestion about using an onion bag etc is another way of doing it where it acts like a small net that the crabs stand on when eating - just makes it a bit easier when pulling them up. Your little one will love it!

BTW: Not sure about eating these, think there are only certain types you can/should eat but could be wrong.

And you didn't say anything wrong, the chaps above are joking about catching the "Crabs" STD...

I've brought the kids crab fishing there and they had fun all right. I'd eat most fish but the harbour crabs are inedible as far as I understand. There wouldn't be any meat and I believe they are crawling with bacteria. The kids enjoy releasing them from the bucket and having a crab race (1st over the edge) as a grand finale. Have fun but keep a hold of the little ones. It's a long way down!

Catching them with the kids is brilliant fun for all and gives them a huge appreciation for the sea and it's life, stuffing a ton of them into a plastic bag to bring home for a disgusting tasting meal is not something I can see any appeal in and best avoided IMO.
