What would this reel be best suited for and is it a good reel.

Yes! it is a good reel, not one of Abu's best, but still a good reel.

It is probably best suited to boat fishing, although it could be handy for some heavy shore fishing where a long cast wasnt needed IMO for the likes of Shark or Conga.

If your looking for a big'ish reel for shore fishing, the 7000c is better suited for casting. There are better "all round" reels kicking about if your looking to start chucking with a multiplier.

My first choice would be the Penn 525 mag, some say its a little wild out of the box, I never found it to be.

For someone just starting out, I would suggest either 20lb or 25lb mono (with normal shock leader) use the reel with all the magnets on, that would tame the reel until your skill came up to scratch, then drop the heavy line for lighter.

IMO the 525Mag is an "in between" of the Abu 6500 size and the 7000 size and has stronger gears than both with the best out of the box drag system on the market.

No conversion needed, few metal parts out in the open, all the reasons why that reel is the best selling shore casting reel in the UK and Ireland, some time this year its going on sale in the US too.

Ive been looking for an excuse to buy a cheaper reel, but again, Penn supermag keeps coming up. The extra money will probably be well spent..

I wouldn't pay the extra for the supermag, I am talking about the standard 525Mag, use like I said and you don't need the extra magnets, once your proficient with the reel, you will be able to use it easier and back the magnets off when you need to.

With the supermag coming out it may even be easier to get some better deals on the standard 525mag, shop around, one of the guys posted a company in the UK called Spotty Dog, try them or Gerry's.

Some times cheaper is more expensive in the long run, I've got 3 525 mags when they first came out. I've never needed to spend a penny on any of them and they all perform as well as they did when I first got them.

525gsmag is a 525gs with mag plate put on instead of centralfugal brakes. 525mag slide, nob and super are basically the same reel but the 525gs has less bearings and a different design.

If you're wanting a good reel for rock fishing it will depend a little on what you're targeting and braking strain line you want.

Fishing here in NE England I use Daiwa SL30SH with 30 or 40lb Trilene. I also use a Penn 535GS but much prefer the SL30 as it is a bit smoother on the cast. I like the 535 though on particularly heavy ground or you might be winching from a bit of height above the water. The Penn is a bit tougher geared. Both these are used when no great distance is required.

If you want a bit more distance and using lighter line and a leader I would opt for the smaller version of both, SL20 or 525. I've just bought a second SL20 as I use these of beaches, in the river as well as heavier ground with 20lb line. Not used a 525GS but suspect it will be similar to the 535. Lots of mates like them.

I've got a 525 mag but only use it beaches etc. Quite nice reels but still prefer the SL20, but that's a personal thing.

Lots of the rock anglers over here opt for SL30s. Other choices are 535 and 7000 series Abu. Hope this helps.

there are a number of second hand reels on ebay, some look near new and good prices, is it wise to buy multis second hand.

IMO the SL20 & SL30 have one big design fault for beachcasting with the reel high, the gear housing is in the wrong place, it hurts your knuckles for one thing and prevents you getting a good grip on the spool. anyone casting with the reel low (left handed) does not have this problem.

Second-hand multipliers, again IMO buy from a shop or a friend, no problem but on the Internet I would always stay clear, but that's only my personal opinion.

what can go wrong with the better reels.

you get the original 525mag-(known as the slidy)
then the 525magT - (knobby tournament)
then 525supermag - (more bearings)
the 525gsmag is the cheapest of the lot of the mag penns.. it has the same slidy end plate as the original but has the silver trim on it the same as the 525gs(non mag), also a black spool where it is gold on the rest of the mags.
